His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Detroit wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that DeLucia had suffered a Pulled Bicep Muscle. This season DeLucia compiled an ERA of 6.68, going 3-9 in 11 starts. He fanned 107 while giving up 101 hits in 103.2 innings.
Wednesday 9/28/1989: Floyd Bannister blanks Minnesota with a 2-hitter
CALIFORNIA - Great days are rare. But not for California's southpaw Floyd Bannister. Minnesota found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 8th time he has done it in his career. Bannister (11-16) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 2, throwing 117 pitches. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Mark Gilbert provided California with the offense Bannister needed as he went 3 for 3, blasting a homerun, scoring twice. Tuesday 9/27/1989: Kevin Tapani pitches 1-hit shutout against Texas
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's right-hander Kevin Tapani will never forget this day. The 25-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 1-hitter, against Texas on Tuesday. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Tapani (14-7) fanned 2 and walked 2, throwing 96 pitches. Buddy Biancalana provided Milwaukee with the offense Tapani needed as he went 2 for 4, and driving in 2 runs. Milwaukee scored 4 runs on 7 hits.
Tuesday 9/27/1989: Milwaukee's Sax severely injured
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's season took a blow when Steve Sax suffered a serious injury in the game against Texas. He hurt his arm throwing a strike to first base. Sax will probaby miss 5-6 weeks. Strained Tricep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia is without its right-hander Tom Hausman for at least 5-6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Andres Galarraga in a game against San Francisco. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being taken to a local hospital, Hausman was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Herniated Disc Back. This season Hausman compiled an ERA of 2.63, going 13-12 in 32 starts. He fanned 83 while giving up 203 hits in 236 innings. Monday 9/26/1989: Houston's Mack wins Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Texas' Albert Hall this time, as the designated hitter displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Albert was on fire, hitting .588 with 3 HR and 7 RBI. His season features a batting average of .284 (116 hits in 409 AB), 12 doubles, 2 triples and 12 bombs. Hall collected 63 RBI and 62 runs as well. Shane Mack wins his 1st Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 10th time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Junior Noboa singled with one out in the 6th inning. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Maddux (22-7) fanned 8 and walked none, throwing 101 pitches. Bob Horner helped Maddux at the plate, he collected 3 hits in 5 trips to the plate, homering once, doubling once, scoring twice and collecting 4 RBI. The final score of the game was 8-0.
Sunday 9/25/1989: Wally Joyner uncorks six hits against Cleveland
CLEVELAND - Baltimore's shortstop Wally Joyner once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Cleveland's pitching staff with a 6 hit performance on Sunday. In the 8th inning he belted a double off Shawn Barton.
