In another shocking news headline today, America's Team, the Atlanta Braves was recognized by the PR department as the NL team of the 80s!
Like the Yankees, the Braves were the only other team to win over 1000 games in the 80's.
There was more competition in the NL though than the AL, as StL won 6 pennants 80-85, Giants had 5 80-81, 87-89 and both won a WS.
The Braves won 9 NL East pennants, made it to 4 WS and brought home the trophy 2 times, and for the decade were 1050-570.
In a somewhat surprise, the Braves made slightly more money than the Yankees, but spent 225 million less, ending up with a net profit over the decade of 154 million.
One of the biggest numbers about the Braves is that 47 million walked through the turnstiles over those 810 games at Fulton County Stadium.
During the 80's Fulgham and Robinson have been fixtures on the team, sharing the spotlights with others, but both were called up as rookies in 1980, with Robinson winning Rookie of the year. John Matlacks first full year with the Braves was in 80 too, after being traded mid season from the Orioles in 79, and being the third SP that won 2 rings with the Braves in the glorious decade.
4 different pitchers won Cy Youngs for the Braves during the decade: Tom Seaver 81, John Fulgham 82, John Matlack 83 and Don Robinson in 85.
Another stat that will most likely never be seen is that Doug Corbett picked up 452 saves, and set and tied his record with 56 saves in a season in 83 and again in 85.
It was a fun decade, looking forward to what the 90's bring us all.
The #1 rock song from 89 -
pure sadness to see another amazing musician leave us. The intro, is another demonstration of why he may be at least the 2nd best drummer ever. (Rich was the best)
