Wednesday 6/1/1990: San Francisco's Garrelts named Pitcher of the Month
Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is Texas' Walt Terrell. He went 4-1 in May and finished the month with an ERA of 1.32. He struck out 23 in 41 innings. Walt fired two shutouts! This season Terrell compiled an ERA of 1.71, going 9-2 in 11 starts. He fanned 62 while giving up 70 hits in 84.1 innings. He has 3 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 2nd in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! The best month of May in the National League certainly had San Francisco's right-hander Scott Garrelts, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. He had an ERA of just 0.65 in 41.2 innings of work in which he struck out 27 hitters. His record in May is 4-0. In 12 starts this year Scott struck out 53 batters in 83.1 innings of work. His ERA is 1.30, his record 8-1. He's 1st in the National League in ERA and 3rd in wins!
Wednesday 6/1/1990: Seattle's Tettleton earns Batter of the Month award
The American League Batter of the Month award goes to Mickey Tettleton, Seattle's starting catcher. He hit .384 with 20 RBI and slugged .651 in 86 at bats. Mickey has gone 59 for 178 (.331) this season, hitting 11 bombs and driving in 39 runs. He has scored 33 runs on his own. He's 4th in the American League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 5th in RBI! The Batter of the Month award in the National League goes to San Diego's Chili Davis this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Chili was on fire, hitting .367 with 6 homeruns and 22 RBI. His season features a batting average of .302 (58 hits in 192 AB), 15 doubles, no triples and 7 taters. Davis collected 28 RBI and 30 runs as well.
Tuesday 5/31/1990: Chicago (A)'s Polonia out for 5-6 weeks
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s leftfielder Luis Polonia will miss at least 5-6 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Inflamed Posterior Cruciate Ligament. Luis is hitting .356 this year, with 16 hits in 45 at bats. He has driven in 9 runs, slugging .444.
Monday 5/30/1990: Alejandro Pena pitches 2-hit shutout against Detroit
DETROIT - It was a great day for Texas' right-hander Alejandro Pena. The 30-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Detroit on Monday. Pena (2-1) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking 2, throwing 125 pitches. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Texas' rightfielder Hosken Powell collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, hitting a homerun, scoring two runs and driving in 4 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Pena. Texas scored 6 runs on 7 hits.
Monday 5/30/1990: New York (N)'s Balboni wins Player of the Week award
Albert Hall from Texas wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Albert pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .474 with 3 HR and 8 RBI while slugging 1.053. It's the 3rd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to New York (N)'s third baseman Steve Balboni. He had an on base percentage of .423 and hit .400, while driving in 10 runs.
Sunday 5/29/1990: Bob W. Malloy pitches 1-hit shutout against Texas
TEXAS - It was a great day for New York (A)'s right-hander Bob W. Malloy. The 25-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 1-hitter, against Texas on Sunday. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Malloy (5-1) struck out 7 and walked 1, throwing 63 of 100 pitches for strikes.
