Holy cow, as we head into the summer, the new decade has ushered in something we haven't seen in the league for a while, and that is no 1 or 2 game lead divisions. The closest we have is out in the AL West where Cali holds just a 4 game lead on both the A's and the Rangers. Both of the aforementioned teams are in a 3 way tie for the WC if the season was to end today.
The AL East that for most of the last two years have had four teams slugging it out for dominance, with at times 3 or all 4 teams tied for first, has turned into a walk for the Jays as they already have an 8 game lead. Cleveland is still fighting though and is the third team tied for the WC.
In the Central, the Sox just keep on going, tied with the Jays with the best record in the AL, they hold a 10 game lead over the tigers, and show no signs of looking back. Detroit while not in the playoff hunt, has quietly rose from the ashes, and looks like they could be back contending in the next year or two.
Over in the NL, the who's who in Pittsburg continues to have them on top, over the Cards with a 5 game lead. Pittsburgh's GM apparently isn't done wheeling and dealing and has been burning up the stadium phone bill with apparently a LOT of long distance calls. Fans in St Louis are perplexed as everything on paper says they should be right there with the Pirates in wins, but the ball has not been bouncing their way the last couple weeks.
The Giants are still on top in the west, now with a 10 game lead. Like the White Sox, they are just cruising now heading to the playoffs, and not looking back.
Atlanta continues to lead the East, and the Mets continue to be the number 1 contender for the wild card. If this trend continues, ti would be the third straight year the NL playoff picture was exactly the same. Montreal continues to be one of the best teams since they went 4-11, and if they keep up the pace they are winning, eventually they will pass by the Mets.
Steve Bye Bye Balboni is living up to his name and now leads all of baseball with 14 homers.
Ted Power for the Giants is the league leader with 18 saves.
Mickey Tettleton of Seattle has overtaken O'Brien of seattle for the best OPS@ .981
