Tuesday 6/21/1990: Greg Olson punishes Cincinnati with four hits, cycle
CINCINNATI - Greg Olson hits 'em where they ain't. Cincinnati certainly agrees as Montreal's catcher unloaded four hits and hitting for the cycle. In the 1st inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Bob Knepper. In the 3rd inning he belted a double off Bob Knepper. In the 5th inning he unloaded a triple off Bob Knepper. A single in the 9th off Greg A. Harris accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Greg scored one run, and he collected one RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .319. 74 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Greg. Pete Coachman was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 7/21/1989.
Tuesday 6/21/1990: Baltimore's Nokes severely injured
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's catcher Matt Nokes will miss at least 5 weeks after he got hurt seriously in a collision at home plate. He laid on the ground without movement for several minutes and had to be carried off the field. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Fractured Wrist. His season features a batting average of .241 (57 hits in 237 AB), 8 doubles, one triple and 7 homeruns. Nokes collected 23 RBI and 27 runs as well.
Monday 6/20/1990: Winters and Wirth win Player of the Week award
Matt Winters wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Matt was on fire, hitting .455 with 5 HR and 13 RBI. Matt managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! The National League's best player of the week was Pittsburgh's Alan Wirth, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Wirth was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.53. Along the way he struck out 13 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.
Friday 6/17/1990: Orel Hershiser pitches 2-hit shutout against Milwaukee
SEATTLE - Orel Hershiser had some fun again. Milwaukee hitters did not. Seattle's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 5th shutout of the season. He now has 17 career shutouts in 244 games started. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Hershiser (10-4) struck out 8 and issued 3 BB, throwing 60 of 103 pitches for strikes. Seattle's designated hitter Hiromitsu Ochiai went 1 for 3, hitting a homerun. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Hershiser. Seattle improved its record to 38-33, scoring 4 runs on 5 hits.
