Friday 7/1/1990: New York (N)'s Sanderson named Pitcher of the Month
Chicago (A)'s Bob Walk had a terrific June, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He had an ERA of just 1.13 in 47.2 innings of work in which he struck out 33 hitters. His record in June is 5-0. Bob got two complete game shutouts as well! His ERA of 1.71 helped him to a 13-2 record this year. He struck out 96 and walked 22 in 136.2 innings. Bob has pitched 2 shutouts and 5 complete games. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! The best month of June in the National League certainly had New York (N)'s right-hander Scott Sanderson, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. He started 6 games in June, going 5-1 and compiling an ERA of 0.87 in 51.2 innings. Scott fanned 30 hitters. Scott fired two shutouts! This season Sanderson compiled an ERA of 1.60, going 12-3 in 17 starts. He fanned 89 while giving up 68 hits in 135 innings. Scott has pitched 5 shutouts and 8 complete games. Toronto's centerfielder Matt Winters had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. Winters helped his team with an average of .387 and 30 RBI in 75 at bats. Winters has hit 23 bombs this year while batting .301. He adds 12 doubles, along with 57 runs scored. He's 1st in the American League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns! Floyd Rayford of New York (N) wins his 3rd Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National League. In 98 at bats he hit .449 with 6 HR and 17 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .321, Floyd hit .310 and slugged .481. He has collected 46 runs batted in this year. He's 7th in the National League in batting!
Thursday 6/30/1990: Bob Walk quiets Texas bats with shutout
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s right-hander Bob Walk is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Texas on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 14th time he has done it in his career. Walk (13-2) struck out 4 and walked none, throwing 67 of 111 pitches for strikes. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Bernie F. Williams provided Chicago (A) with the offense Walk needed as he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a double. Chicago (A) improved its record to 54-27, scoring 2 runs on 8 hits.
Monday 6/27/1990: Ralph Citarella blanks Pittsburgh with a 1-hitter
PITTSBURGH - Great days are rare. But not for Atlanta's right-hander Ralph Citarella. Pittsburgh found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 4th time he has done it in his career. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Citarella (2-8) fanned 7 and walked 1, throwing 107 pitches. The hitting star for Atlanta was second baseman Julio Cruz, he finished with 3 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, scoring 2 runs and collecting 2 RBI. Atlanta scored 6 runs on 10 hits.
Monday 6/27/1990: Mitch Webster knocks lights out with three homeruns
OAKLAND - Mitch Webster was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Detroit to a 10-3 win over Oakland by homering three times. His 1st shot, off Paul Hartzell in the 4th inning, was a three-run homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. In the 6th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Mike Boddicker. Number 3 in the 8th inning, a shot estimated at 417 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. Mitch stroked 3 hits in 5 AB, scoring three runs with 7 RBI. So far this season he is batting .219 with 15 homers and 36 RBI.
Monday 6/27/1990: Chris Hammond dominates Boston, gives up just 2 hits
KANSAS CITY - It was a great day for Kansas City's left-hander Chris Hammond. The 24-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Boston on Monday. Hammond (4-8) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 7. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' The hitting star for Kansas City was designated hitter Jim Tracy, he stroked 3 hits in 3 AB, hitting a double, and driving in 2 runs. The final score of the game was 6-0.
Monday 6/27/1990: Player of the Week honors go to Shields and Galarraga
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Milwaukee's Steve Shields this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Steve went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.51, while fanning 16 in 17.2 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. His ERA of 2.01 helped him to a 11-6 record this year. He struck out 134 and walked 16 in 134 innings. He has 10 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 5th in the American League in ERA and 3rd in wins! Saturday 6/25/1990: Reggie Patterson (OAK) will miss 5 weeks
OAKLAND - When it rains, it pours. Oakland's right-hander Reggie Patterson will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Baltimore where he left the field in the 7th inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle. His ERA of 5.23 helped him to a 2-1 record this year. He struck out 18 and walked 14 in 32.2 innings.
Friday 6/24/1990: Matt Winters (TOR) will miss full season
TORONTO - Toronto's centerfielder Matt Winters suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself diving for a ball. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Toronto wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Winters had suffered a Broken Knee. Matt is hitting .301 this year, with 82 hits in 272 at bats. He has driven in 70 runs, slugging .599. He's 1st in the American League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns!
