Optimism returned to the Brew City in June with the team running off an 18-8 record. The turn around month put the team on the fringe of the AL wildcard hunt as they head into the All Star break. Not a contributing factor to this was starter Rick Aguilera whose tenure in Milwaukee ended as quickly as it began. Aguilera let it be known to the front office that he had no intention of signing a contact extension and intends to test the free agent market. Not willing to take the gamble Aguilera would return to Milwaukee after pedaling his wares around the league, the Brewers dealt the righty to the Dodgers for a first round pick and outfield prospect Jeff McNeely.
First half fan favourite moment
The number one moment from the first half of the 1990 season was selected to be Steve Shields no-hitter of the Boston Red Sox. Shields historic outing put him in the records books next to Brewers legend Steve Rogers as the only pitchers in Milwaukee history to toss a no-hitter. The lone blemish preventing a perfect game that afternoon was a walk to Boston hitter Dave Anderson.
Brewers Batter of the Month
Robin Yount .305BA 2HR 15RBI 10R .408 OBP
Edging out rookie Tino Martinez
Brewers Pitcher of the Month
Steve Shields 4-1 40.2IP 1.33ERA 6BB 37K
Rookie Report
Outfielder Jose Canseco took a step forward in May and a step back in June. Canseco continues to flash the type of raw power that made him a high draft pick but the lack of patience at the plate maybe his eventual undoing.
Tino Martinez showed not only is his defense MLB ready but his bat is there too. Martinez found the bleachers for his first Major League home run and proceeded to add 3 more for good measure. In addition the young first baseman hit .307 on the month to put himself safely above the Mendoza line for the season.
