Tuesday 7/19/1990: St. Louis' Jones out for 4-5 weeks
ST. LOUIS - When it rains, it pours. St. Louis' right-hander Doug Jones will not pitch for at least 4-5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Cincinnati where he left the field in the 9th inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Spasms Back. Surgery will be performed next week. His ERA of 2.30 helped him to a 2-3 record this year. He struck out 35 and walked 7 in 54.2 innings.
Monday 7/18/1990: John Burkett shuts out Milwaukee on one hit
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's right-hander John Burkett is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Milwaukee found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Burkett 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 2nd shutouts in his career. Burkett (5-5) fanned 5 and walked 1, throwing 94 pitches. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Minnesota's catcher Keith Moreland finished with 1 hit in 4 AB, homering once, and driving in 3 runs. The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Chicago (A)'s Randy D. Johnson this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games.
Sunday 7/17/1990: Fernando Valenzuela fires 2-hitter against Cincinnati
CINCINNATI - Great days are rare. But not for St. Louis' left-hander Fernando Valenzuela. Cincinnati found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 11th time he has done it in his career. Valenzuela (4-2) struck out 7 and issued 1 BB, throwing 69 of 119 pitches for strikes. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Kirk Gibson provided St. Louis with the offense Valenzuela needed as he collected 3 hits in 5 trips to the plate. St. Louis scored 7 runs on 13 hits.
Friday 7/15/1990: Mark W. Davis shuts out Boston on one hit
BOSTON - Seattle's lefty Mark W. Davis is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Boston on just one hit. Wednesday 7/13/1990: Scott McGregor pitches his 1st shutout of the season
CHICAGO (A) - Scott McGregor had some fun again. Milwaukee hitters did not. Chicago (A)'s lefty gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. McGregor (9-8) struck out 2 and walked 2, throwing 60 of 103 pitches for strikes. Rickey Henderson provided Chicago (A) with the offense McGregor needed as he went 2 for 3, stroking a double.
