For the first time since the 1972 season it looks like the Brewers will fall short of the .500 mark. A 49 - 56 record to wrap up the month of July has put the chance at a .500 or better season on the brink of failure. The front office was clearly aware of the need to renew and recharge as they shipped out several long time Brewers. Longtime staff ace and fan favourite Steve Shields was sent to Los Angeles in a package that featured promising young arm Woody Williams. Reliever Bobby Castillo ended his 12 year run in Milwaukee when he was dealt to St.Louis.
The team aims to renew around young arms like Williams, Kevin Tapani and bats like Tino Martinez. Robin Yount and Joe Charboneau remain to provider leadership and help mold the young bucks into the next generation of Brewers stars.

Rookie Report
Think of this season as learning on the job for young Jose Canseco. He has shown the power that made him a high draft selection but his batting eye needs to improve and cut down on the 130 plus strikeouts he has already amassed.
Tino Martinez continues to shine with the glove but his bat remains up and down. Talking to scouts around the league they are convinced it is only a matter of time before he puts it altogether.
