Tuesday 8/23/1990: Texas' Larry Walker ropes five hits
BOSTON - Larry Walker is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. His 1st hit was a double off Don Heinkel in the 1st inning. A RBI double off Don Heinkel in the 3rd inning accounted for his 2nd hit. In the 7th inning he unloaded a three-run homerun off Dennis Cook. He had singles in the 6th and in the 8th inning (one RBI). Larry scored 3 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! He now has a total of 133 hits this season, accounting for a .287 batting average. Texas improved its record to 63-62, scoring 18 runs on 20 hits.
Monday 8/22/1990: California's Rodriguez wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was California's Ivan Rodriguez, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Ivan was on fire, hitting .476 with 0 HR and 8 RBI. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to San Francisco's Kirby Puckett this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He had an on base percentage of .464 and hit .462, while driving in 14 runs. Kirby managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week.
Wednesday 8/17/1990: Alan Wirth pitches his 5th shutout of the season
PITTSBURGH - Alan Wirth had some fun again. Houston hitters did not. Pittsburgh's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 5th shutout of the season. He now has 10 career shutouts in 272 games started. Wirth (14-8) struck out 7 and walked none, throwing 61 of 95 pitches for strikes. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Tom Brunansky helped Wirth at the plate, he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, homering once, scoring 2 runs with 3 RBI. Pittsburgh scored 8 runs on 10 hits.
