As the last out was recorded on Tuesday against the Astros, the crowd went wild, as hometown hero Doug Corbett finally surpassed Jack Aker for the all time save title. Jack Aker set the record in 1980 when he got 4 saves to add a little distance from the year before when he broke Lindy McDaniel record, who retired in 1974 with the then record of 551, and had 553 going into the 1980 season. Jacks claim to fame lasted 11 years, who knows how long Corbett's will.
In the last 13 years Doug has won the NL Relief Pitcher of the year an astonishing 8 times, been voted to represent the NL in the Allstar game 8 times, lead the league in saves 8 times, has a career 2.16 era, set the record for saves in a season at 56, and then tied that record a couple years later.
Not only will Doug become a Braves Ring of Fame inductee, but he should be a shoe in for a first ballot for a Hall of Fame induction.
Doug recently inked a four year extension which should see him retire as a Brave, the only organization he has been with for his entire career. While he should easily break the 600 save mark, the question is, can he make it to the absurd 700 save mark? Doug just needs one more save to reach 40 saves for the 9th time in his career.
In other news, the longest winning streak to start a season that this reporter is aware of, finally came to a close. After going 20-0, young phenom John Smoltz finally had a loss, and now is 21-1 on the season.
California has been ice cold and now only leads the AL West by a single game after having a comfortable 7 game lead just two short weeks ago. Seattle and Cleveland have been red hot and are poised to not only take away the West from Cali, but also knock their postseason dreams to the curb.
Boston is the first 100 game loser of the 90 campaign, will there be others to Join them?
AllStar SP Bob Walk went down for a few weeks, will the Sox even notice? He should return in plenty of time to get his 20th win and help lead the Sox into the post season.
How about the season Will Clark for the Giants is having, 2nd in Avg .341, 3rd in HR 25, 1st in OPS 1.031, and 1st in runs scored 91.
The #29 rock song of 90... one of my top 10 songs from this band
