Tuesday 9/6/1990: Kevin Brown dominates Boston, gives up just 2 hits
BOSTON - Great days are rare. But not for Toronto's right-hander Kevin Brown. Boston found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 5th shutout this season, and the 5th time he has done it in his career. Brown (14-6) fanned 4 and walked 2, throwing 103 pitches. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Ron Gant provided Toronto with the offense Brown needed as he finished 3 for 6, hitting a homerun, doubling once, and collecting 4 RBI. The final score of the game was 13-0.
Monday 9/5/1990: Frank Tanana turns in great performance against Kansas City
KANSAS CITY - Age doesn't matter. At least Seattle's left-hander Frank Tanana shares this opinion. The 37 year old pitched a 1-hit shutout against Kansas City, recording his 1st shutout of the season. Tanana (8-8) fanned 2 and walked 4, throwing 108 pitches. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' The hitting star for Seattle was catcher Mickey Tettleton, he got 2 hits in 5 AB, hitting a homerun, scoring two runs with 4 RBI. Seattle improved its record to 83-54, scoring 9 runs on 12 hits.
Monday 9/5/1990: Coleman (SEA) and DeLeon (PHI) win P.O.W. award
Seattle's leftfielder Vince Coleman had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He hit .565 with 10 RBI and slugged .870 in 23 at bats. Coleman has walked 28 times this year and posts a .299 OBP. While batting .254, 107 for 422, he has driven in 58 runs. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Philadelphia's Jose DeLeon this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. DeLeon was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.26. Along the way he struck out 11 in 14.1 innings. This season DeLeon compiled an ERA of 3.51, going 7-9 in 24 starts. He fanned 135 while giving up 153 hits in 154 innings.
Sunday 9/4/1990: Seattle's George Brett laces 3000th career hit
KANSAS CITY - Seattle's third baseman George Brett joined some elite company today, collecting his 3000th career hit! His best year so far was 1980 where he hit .322 with 30 homeruns and 120 RBI. 'You dream about that as a kid, but when you reach such a milestone it's hard to believe. Fantastic.' With no outs in the 6th inning, George drilled a double, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. The Hall of Fame already has reserved a place for this great player.
Sunday 9/4/1990: Oakland has no chance in a 2-hitter by Steve McCatty
CALIFORNIA - California's right-hander Steve McCatty is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Oakland found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. McCatty 3rd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 20th shutouts in his career. McCatty (19-7) fanned 2 and walked 2, throwing 84 pitches. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' California's catcher Ivan Rodriguez stroked 1 hit in 2 AB. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of McCatty. California scored 1 run on 2 hits.
Saturday 9/3/1990: Randy Myers (TOR) will miss full season
TORONTO - Toronto's southpaw Randy Myers experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 8th inning of the game against Cleveland, Myers complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Toronto wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Myers had suffered a Torn Back Muscle. Opposing players hit .209 against Randy this season. While posting an ERA of 2.40 he went 7-2 in 0 starts, fanning 70 and walking 22 hitters.
Saturday 9/3/1990: Baltimore's Cruz out for 5 weeks
BALTIMORE - Baltimore is without its right-hander Victor Cruz for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Jim Eisenreich in a game against Oakland. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Strained Posterior Cruciate Ligament. Surgery will be performed next week. His season numbers are: .274 AVG, 122 hits, 18 doubles, 5 triples and 19 taters, along with 55 RBI and 62 runs scored.
