In our last edition we speculated that the Brewers' .500 or better streak that stretched back to 1972 maybe in jeopardy. As August comes to a close a renewed drive in the this years squad has put .500 within spitting distance. Milwaukee wraps up the month at 64-68, just 4 games under .500 thanks in large part to newly acquired players like Mark Parent and Woody Williams. As old reliables Robin Yount and Joe Charboneau continue to bring their best day in and day out. They have been joined by the aforementioned Parent and Williams, along with a long time minor league veteran in Steve Trout, deadline acquisition Mike Griffin and a strong August from veteran shortstop Kelly Heath. Just over a month of the season remains but opponents should not take this squad lightly as they finished out their schedule.

Rookie Watch The Brewers had no choice but to pull the trigger on sending young slugger Jose Canseco back to AAA for further seasoning. The choice was letting Canseco learn by watching on the major league squad or get everyday playing time in Denver. Most believe the right move was made as Canseco needs to improve his batting eye and cut down on his strikeouts if he wishes to be an everyday player in the pros.
Over at first base Tino Martinez continues to be a steady Gold Glove level defender but only tantalizes fans and scouts with the potential of his bat. This year has been a learning experience at the plate for Tino and most expect next year his bat to quickly catch up to his glove.
