Monday 5/2/1991: New York (N)'s Rayford wins Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Seattle's Mark W. Davis this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Davis was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.59. Along the way he struck out 12 in 15.1 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. His ERA of 1.37 helped him to a 5-0 record this year. He struck out 46 and walked 14 in 46 innings. Mark W. has pitched one shutout and one complete game. He's 3rd in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! It's the 3rd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to New York (N)'s leftfielder Floyd Rayford. Floyd pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .346 with 3 HR and 8 RBI while slugging .808.
Sunday 5/1/1991: Seattle's Smoltz named Pitcher of the Month
It's the 1st time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Seattle's pitcher Orel Hershiser. He went 6-0 in April and finished the month with an ERA of 0.55. He struck out 35 in 48.2 innings. Orel also fired a shutout. Seattle's pitcher John Smoltz is the American League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in April. He went 4-0 in April and finished the month with an ERA of 0.70. He struck out 24 in 38.1 innings. John pitched a shutout as well.
Sunday 5/1/1991: Pittsburgh's Henderson named Batter of the Month
It's the 2nd time that the American League Batter of the Month award goes to Chicago (A)'s rightfielder Bernie F. Williams. Bernie F. was on fire, hitting .330 with 6 homeruns and 24 RBI. Pittsburgh's rightfielder Dave Henderson had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. He had an on base percentage of .429 and hit .368, while driving in 20 runs.
Friday 4/29/1991: Roger Clemens pitches his 3rd shutout of the season
MINNESOTA - Baltimore's right-hander Roger Clemens is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Minnesota found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Clemens 3rd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 16th shutouts in his career. Clemens (4-2) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 2, throwing 121 pitches. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Brett Butler helped Clemens at the plate, he went 1 for 4, hitting a double, with 4 RBI. The final score of the game was 4-0.
Thursday 4/28/1991: Dave Righetti dominates Baltimore, gives up just 2 hits
MINNESOTA - Great days are rare. But not for Minnesota's left-hander Dave Righetti. Baltimore found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 3rd time he has done it in his career. Righetti (2-3) struck out 2 and walked 1, throwing 57 of 90 pitches for strikes. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Jeff Conine provided Minnesota with the offense Righetti needed as he stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, scoring twice. Minnesota scored 8 runs on 10 hits.
Tuesday 4/26/1991: Dwight Gooden dominates Detroit, gives up just one hit
DETROIT - Cleveland's right-hander Dwight Gooden is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Detroit on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 9th time he has done it in his career. With no outs in the 7th inning Doug Jennings singled to break up the no-hitter. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Gooden (5-1) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 7. Cleveland's first baseman Eddie Murray finished 1 for 5, hitting a homerun, and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Gooden. Cleveland improved its record to 16-7, scoring 5 runs on 10 hits.
