Thursday 5/12/1991: Mike Paxton dominates Chicago (N), gives up just 2 hits
CHICAGO (N) - Age doesn't matter. At least New York (N)'s right-hander Mike Paxton shares this opinion. The 37 year old pitched a 2-hit shutout against Chicago (N), recording his 1st shutout of the season. Paxton (4-2) struck out 4 and walked 1, throwing 75 of 125 pitches for strikes. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' The hitting star for New York (N) was shortstop Johnny Ray, he collected 1 hit in 4 trips to the plate, stroking a double, and collecting 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 5-0.
Wednesday 5/11/1991: Willie Upshaw (MON) will miss full season
MONTREAL - Montreal's leftfielder Willie Upshaw will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Montreal and San Francisco. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Upshaw collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Back Muscle. His season numbers are: .315 AVG, 41 hits, 10 doubles, one triple and 5 longballs, along with 24 RBI and 15 runs scored. He's 8th in the National League in batting and 8th in RBI!
