PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's centerfielder Steve Finley hurt himself in the 5th inning while diving for a batted ball. He got up slowly and had to leave the game. Steve Finley will miss at least 8 weeks. Finley was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Broken Hand. Finley has hit for a .233 average this season. He has 18 extra base hits along with 64 total bases, resulting in a .403 slugging percentage.
Monday 5/23/1991: New York (N)'s Paxton wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Mike Jeffcoat, one of California's best starting pitchers. Jeffcoat was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 5 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. This season Jeffcoat compiled an ERA of 3.11, going 3-5 in 10 starts. He fanned 46 while giving up 80 hits in 81 innings. Mike has pitched one shutout and 4 complete games. The National League's best player of the week was New York (N)'s Mike Paxton, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. TEXAS - Ron Robinson took the mound and never left. And Texas hitters couldn't touch him at all. Detroit's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 11 career shutouts in 198 games started. Robinson (5-3) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 2. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Pete Incaviglia helped Robinson at the plate, he went 1 for 3, hitting a homerun, and driving in 2 runs. Detroit improved its record to 26-18, scoring 6 runs on 8 hits.

TEXAS - Texas' first baseman Kent Hrbek will miss at least 6 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Pulled Back Muscle. While compiling an on base percentage of .287, Kent hit .244 and slugged .356. He has collected 9 runs batted in this year.

ATLANTA - Atlanta's rightfielder Henry Cotto hurt himself in the 1st inning while diving for a batted ball. He got up slowly and had to leave the game. Henry Cotto will miss at least 5 weeks. Atlanta wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Cotto had suffered a Fractured Hand.
