Wednesday 6/1/1991: Terrell and Paxton receive Pitcher of the Month award
Walt Terrell couldn't have pitched much better than he did in May, and the American League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He struck out 29 hitters in his 5 starts, putting together a record of 5-0 while pitching 29 innings. His ERA in May was 0.65. Walt pitched a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .161 against Walt this season. While posting an ERA of 0.82 he went 8-0 in 11 starts, fanning 77 and walking 19 hitters. He has 2 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! Mike Paxton couldn't have pitched much better than he did in May, and the National League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. The American League's best player of the month was Kansas City's Dickie Thon, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. In 91 at bats he hit .385 with 5 HR and 26 RBI. Dickie is hitting .306 this year, with 52 hits in 170 at bats. He has driven in 37 runs, slugging .529. The Batter of the Month award in the National League goes to San Francisco's Kirby Puckett this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Puckett helped his team with an average of .406 and 19 RBI in 106 at bats. Puckett has hit for a .350 average this season. He has 30 extra base hits along with 132 total bases, resulting in a .608 slugging percentage. He's 1st in the National League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 9th in RBI!
Monday 5/30/1991: California's Thompson wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Jason D. Thompson, California's starting first baseman. He had an on base percentage of .560 and hit .545, while driving in 8 runs. His season features a batting average of .213 (38 hits in 178 AB), 5 doubles, one triple and 2 bombs. Thompson collected 25 RBI and 22 runs as well. Chili Davis wins his 3rd Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He had an on base percentage of .680 and hit .650, while driving in 8 runs. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well!
Sunday 5/29/1991: Huge blow for Toronto's Niedenfuer, career over
TORONTO - It was one of baseball saddest days. Toronto's right-hander Tom Niedenfuer fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against Chicago (A) on Sunday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Jeff Reed, then suddenly collapsed. After being taken to a local hospital, Niedenfuer was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Torn Ligament Elbow. This season Niedenfuer compiled an ERA of 0.95, going 0-1 in 0 starts. He fanned 23 while giving up 22 hits in 28.1 innings. His career featured a record of 39-42 with an ERA of 3.30. Baseball will certainly miss this great player.
Saturday 5/28/1991: Walt Terrell dominates Toronto, throws NO-HITTER
CHICAGO (A) - Walt Terrell had some fun again. REAL fun. Toronto hitters did not. Chicago (A)'s right-hander fired a no-hitter in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 19 career shutouts in 229 games started. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped. What a day!' Terrell (8-0) struck out 7 and issued 4 BB, throwing 72 of 118 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Chicago (A) was shortstop Barry Larkin, he stroked 2 hits in 3 AB. The final score of the game was 1-0.
Friday 5/27/1991: Joe Redfield out for 4-5 weeks
TEXAS - Texas' season has taken a hit after one of their best players, third baseman Joe Redfield, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 4-5 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Inflamed Anterior Cruciate Ligament. Surgery will be performed next week. His season numbers are: .266 AVG, 46 hits, one double, no triples and 4 homeruns, along with 20 RBI and 14 runs scored.
