About 3 weeks ago, after watching him post a 4-0 record in 6 starts with a 2.82 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP in San Jose, the Rockies promoted second round draft pick, Jimmy Haynes to AA Shreveport, closely following Steve Karsay. Unsurprisingly AA has not come quite as easy for Haynes. While his teammate Karsay has continued to dominate just as he did in San Jose, Haynes has struggled. In San Jose, Haynes was able to dominate batters with his stuff despite his spotty command, AA batters however have not been as easily dominated. Rockies brass are likely to let him figure it out, it seems as if the plan was to push Haynes somewhat aggressively to see what they have. Many within the front office picture Haynes more as a reliever than as a starter with his limited pitch arsenal and the fact that he never pitched a lot of innings in high school. As of now the Rockies will let Haynes continue to log innings as a starter, one
would think maybe for a couple of seasons at least before making that decision, unless Haynes just proves unable to be successful once he gets past a time through the lineup. In his 4 starts at Shreveport he's 1-1 with a 6.64 ERA and a 1.82 WHIP. The Rockies loaded up on arms in this years draft, so it will be
interesting to see how it all sorts out as they get closer and closer to fielding a big league club. Does Haynes fit in to that picture? Only time will tell.
Did you know................. Jimmy Haynes was born and raised in LaGrange, GA, a key site during the civil war and in the equal rights movement.
Jimmy was high school teammates with Mike Cameron, one of the top prospects in the 1992 amateur draft.
