MILWAUKEE - Ellis Burks is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. His 1st hit, a two-run homerun off Woody Williams in the 1st inning, cleared the fence in right field. In the 3rd inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Woody Williams. His 4th cleared the based, a three-run double off Brian Dubois in the 5th inning. He collected singles in the 4th and in the 7th . Ellis scored 2 runs, and he collected 6 RBI as well! He now has a total of 79 hits this season, accounting for a .282 batting average. The final score of the game was 12-7.
Monday 6/20/1991: Dan Petry pitches 1-hit shutout against Chicago (N)
LOS ANGELES (N) - Dan Petry had some fun again. Chicago (N) hitters did not. Los Angeles (N)'s right-hander gave up just one hit in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 34 career shutouts in 389 games started. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Petry (12-3) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 2, throwing 119 pitches. The hitting star for Los Angeles (N) was third baseman Bill D. Doran, he finished 3 for 4, blasting a homerun, hitting a double, scoring three runs and driving in 2 runs. The final score of the game was 10-0.
Monday 6/20/1991: Fernando Valenzuela pitches his 1st shutout of the season
ST. LOUIS - Fernando Valenzuela took the mound and never left. And New York (N) hitters couldn't touch him at all. St. Louis' left-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 13 career shutouts in 234 games started. Ozzie Virgil Jr. spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he doubled with one out in the 7th inning. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Valenzuela (11-3) struck out 3 and walked 1, throwing 68 of 104 pitches for strikes. Chili Davis provided St. Louis with the offense Valenzuela needed as he finished 1 for 2, blasting a homerun, scoring two runs and driving in 2 runs. St. Louis improved its record to 37-36, scoring 6 runs on 9 hits.
Monday 6/20/1991: Houston's Hanson wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Minnesota's Rick Matula, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Matula was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50. Along the way he struck out 5 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. His ERA of 4.56 helped him to a 4-8 record this year. He struck out 33 and walked 35 in 108.2 innings. Rick has pitched one shutout and 3 complete games. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Houston's Erik Hanson this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Hanson was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.60. Along the way he struck out 6 in 15 innings. This season Hanson compiled an ERA of 3.47, going 7-4 in 15 starts. He fanned 53 while giving up 83 hits in 93.1 innings.
