MONTREAL - Montreal's players were scared when they had to watch Terry Harper suffer a serious injury when he dove for a ball in the game against San Francisco. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Harper will probaby miss 8-9 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Broken Foot. His season features a batting average of .203 (59 hits in 291 AB), 8 doubles, one triple and 6 bombs. Harper collected 30 RBI and 28 runs as well.
Monday 7/11/1991: Houston's Greenwell wins Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to California's Mike Jeffcoat this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Jeffcoat was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.06. Along the way he struck out 11 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. His ERA of 2.23 helped him to a 11-5 record this year. He struck out 88 and walked 30 in 149.1 innings. Mike has pitched 3 shutouts and 8 complete games. He's 7th in the American League in ERA and 6th in wins! The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Houston's Mike Greenwell this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .500 with 4 RBI and slugged .773 in 22 at bats. Greenwell has hit for a .230 average this season. He has 20 extra base hits along with 84 total bases, resulting in a .327 slugging percentage.
Friday 7/8/1991: Joe Oliver out for full season
NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s catcher Joe Oliver suffered a season ending injury he was bowled over in a collision at home plate. Oliver laid unconscious on the field for several minutes and had to be carried off the field. He will miss the entire season. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Broken Wrist which will require surgery. Joe is hitting .211 this year, with 40 hits in 190 at bats. He has driven in 28 runs, slugging .353.
Friday 7/8/1991: Dave Stieb (CAL) will miss 5 weeks
CALIFORNIA - When it rains, it pours. California's right-hander Dave Stieb will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Boston where he left the field in the 2nd inning. Ruptured Bicep Tendon was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Stieb compiled an ERA of 3.47, going 8-4 in 17 starts. He fanned 31 while giving up 83 hits in 106.1 innings. He has 2 complete games and one shutout.
Wednesday 7/6/1991: Greg Maddux dominates Philadelphia, gives up just 2 hits
PHILADELPHIA - Atlanta's right-hander Greg Maddux is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Philadelphia found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Maddux 3rd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 19th shutouts in his career. Maddux (12-2) struck out 5 and issued 1 BB, throwing 70 of 112 pitches for strikes. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Mark Brouhard helped Maddux at the plate, he went 3 for 5, doubling twice, and driving in 4 runs. The final score of the game was 8-0.
Tuesday 7/5/1991: Mike Jeffcoat shuts out Detroit on 2 hits
DETROIT - Great days are rare. But not for California's left-hander Mike Jeffcoat. Detroit found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 14th time he has done it in his career. Jeffcoat (10-5) fanned 9 and walked 1, throwing 111 pitches. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Ivan Rodriguez helped Jeffcoat at the plate, he stroked 3 hits in 5 AB, hitting a double, scoring twice with 2 RBI. California scored 7 runs on 10 hits.
