Tuesday 7/26/1991: Fred McGriff uncorks cycle hits against San Diego
LOS ANGELES (N) - Fred McGriff hits 'em where they ain't. San Diego certainly agrees as Los Angeles (N)'s first baseman unloaded four hits and hitting for the cycle. A RBI triple off Tom Candiotti in the 1st inning, accounted for his 1st hit. A single in the 3rd off Tom Candiotti accounted for his 2nd hit. A 436 foot drive to right field marked his 3rd hit, a solo homerun off Tom Candiotti in the 5th inning. His 4th hit was a RBI double off Jeff Heathcock in the 8th inning. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Fred scored one run, and he collected 3 RBI as well! He is hitting .295 this season, with 15 HR and 67 RBI. 75 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Fred. Greg Olson was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 6/21/1990.
Monday 7/25/1991: Soto and Smoltz win Player of the Week award
Mario Soto of Cleveland wins his 4th Player of the Week award for dominating American League's hitters the entire week. Soto was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.55. Along the way he struck out 7 in 16.1 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. Cleveland's pitcher John Smoltz had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.50 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. John has a record of 12-3 this season, with an ERA of 2.00. In 157.1 Innings he was able to strike out 112 batters. John has pitched 3 shutouts and 5 complete games. He's 7th in the American League in ERA and 8th in wins!
Sunday 7/24/1991: Jeffrey Leonard out for 7-8 weeks
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, leftfielder Jeffrey Leonard, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 7-8 weeks. San Francisco wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Leonard had suffered a Pulled Anterior Cruciate Ligament. Leonard has walked 16 times this year and posts a .354 OBP. While batting .315, 98 for 311, he has driven in 46 runs. He's 5th in the National League in batting!
Friday 7/22/1991: Luis A. Rivera on fire, laces five hits
NEW YORK (N) - Chicago (N)'s shortstop Luis A. Rivera once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up New York (N)'s pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Friday. A pitch from Neil Allen in the 2nd inning left his bat for a triple. Number 2 in the 4th inning, a shot estimated at 393 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. His 5th hit, off Paul Hartzell in the 8th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in right-center. He had singles in the 5th inning and in the 7th inning (one RBI). Luis A. scored 4 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 115 hits in 362 at bats, resulting in a .318 batting average. Chicago (N) improved its record to 54-44, scoring 17 runs on 19 hits.
