Tuesday 8/9/1991: Pittsburgh's Kevin Mitchell clears fence three times
CINCINNATI - Kevin Mitchell can hit'em a long way, and Cincinnati pitchers couldn't smile about that today. Pittsburgh's shortstop unloaded three bombs, adding to his reputation of being one of the best power hitters in the game. Number 1 in the 6th inning, a shot estimated at 444 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. In the 9th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Jeff Tabaka. His 3rd shot, a three-run homerun off Jeff Tabaka in the 9th inning, cleared the fence in left field. Kevin got 3 hits in 6 AB, scoring FOUR times and collecting 7 RBI. So far this season he is batting .248 with 22 homers and 68 RBI. On 6/15/1991, Jay Buhner was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game. Pittsburgh scored 25 runs on 19 hits.
Tuesday 8/9/1991: Jeff Russell shuts out Milwaukee on 2 hits
TORONTO - Great days are rare. But not for Toronto's right-hander Jeff Russell. Milwaukee found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 5th time he has done it in his career. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Russell (15-4) fanned 5 and walked 3, throwing 114 pitches. Toronto's third baseman Jack Clark finished 1 for 4. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Russell. Toronto scored 2 runs on 4 hits.
