Baseball fans it finally happened. On August 30th in a 3-2 game the Hometown Brave leading the Cards Manager Reddington Called on Doug Corbet to close out the game, and when he did...
The wait was over and for the first time in the annals of the league
The Save mark that had stood against the onslaught of time for 46 season it had not been reached, and the old guy from Sarasota Florida, notched yet another achievement.
When Doug was drafted in 74, he looked to have some promise, and slowly worked his way up to AAA where he had a disastrous year in 77, and was on the verge of becoming a career minor leaguer. Over the winter he was rumored to be spending time with the Braves pitching coach, and lightning struck. His talent shot off the charts, though he would suffer through much of 78 with consistency issues, he finally settled down and come 79 he became the most dominant reliever in Baseball. From 79 he would be selected to 9 all star appearances and also 9 Rolaids reliever of the year award, with not all 9 being the same year as the other.
In a stunning announcement he said after the game that if he has 650 at the end of 92, he will come back for one more year to try and hit 700. Now baseball fans, that seems very unlikely even if he did get 152 save over the span of 3 years, but it is something we cant wait to see, if it does happen. From the interview "my arm is plum tired, and it will never be the same as I get older, but since that's the case anyways... 700 is the goal."
It is safe to say baseball may never see such an epic run again as Doug has had, and if there is, it'll be because Doug proved it was possible.
