Friday 7/29/1992: Huge blow for St. Louis' Valenzuela, career over
ST. LOUIS - It was one of baseball saddest days. St. Louis' southpaw Fernando Valenzuela fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against Cincinnati on Friday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Jeff Tackett, then suddenly collapsed. After being taken to a local hospital, Valenzuela was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Torn Tricep Muscle. This season Valenzuela compiled an ERA of 3.00, going 8-5 in 21 starts. He fanned 104 while giving up 111 hits in 150 innings. He has 2 complete games and one shutout. His career featured a record of 133-66 with an ERA of 3.19. Baseball will certainly miss this great player.
Wednesday 7/27/1992: Mike Jeffcoat pitches his 3rd shutout of the season
CALIFORNIA - Mike Jeffcoat took the mound and never left. And Texas hitters couldn't touch him at all. California's left-hander gave up just one hit in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 17 career shutouts in 259 games started. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Jeffcoat (16-1) struck out 7 and issued 2 BB, throwing 71 of 117 pitches for strikes. Ken Griffey Jr. provided California with the offense Jeffcoat needed as he finished 3 for 4, doubling twice. California improved its record to 66-36, scoring 5 runs on 7 hits.
