Ellis Burks wins his 1st Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Ellis was on fire, hitting .412 with 2 HR and 7 RBI. Darryl Strawberry wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Strawberry helped his team with an average of .478 and 13 RBI in 23 at bats.
Friday 8/19/1992: San Diego has no chance in a 2-hitter by Don Robinson
SAN DIEGO - Don Robinson had some fun again. San Diego hitters did not. Atlanta's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 5th shutout of the season. He now has 31 career shutouts in 414 games started. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Robinson (11-4) struck out 6 and issued 2 BB, throwing 66 of 95 pitches for strikes. Ken Oberkfell helped Robinson at the plate, he went 2 for 5, stroking a double, and driving in 3 runs. Atlanta scored 6 runs on 8 hits.
Thursday 8/18/1992: Dan Petry fires 2-hitter against Cincinnati
CINCINNATI - Dan Petry took the mound and never left. And Cincinnati hitters couldn't touch him at all. Los Angeles (N)'s right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 38 career shutouts in 426 games started. Jeff Tackett spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he singled with one out in the 6th inning. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Petry (13-7) struck out 7 and walked none, throwing 72 of 105 pitches for strikes. Al Chambers provided Los Angeles (N) with the offense Petry needed as he got 3 hits in 4 AB, stroking a double, with three runs scored with 2 RBI. Los Angeles (N) scored 8 runs on 11 hits.
Wednesday 8/17/1992: Don Mattingly has 2000th career hits
OAKLAND - New York (A)'s players had every reason to congratulate Don Mattingly, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! He hit a two run homerun in the 6th off Bruce Hurst for number 2000. In 11 years of big league action so far, Don has compiled a batting average of .301, along with 220 homeruns and 1108 RBI. 'It's hard to believe that I did it. I want to thank my family, my friends and my teammates!'
Tuesday 8/16/1992: Curt Schilling dominates Detroit, gives up just one hit
BOSTON - Boston's right-hander Curt Schilling is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Detroit on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 2nd time he has done it in his career. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Schilling (10-10) struck out 7 and issued 4 BB, throwing 67 of 116 pitches for strikes. Howard Johnson helped Schilling at the plate, he finished 2 for 4, blasting a homerun, with 2 RBI. Boston scored 5 runs on 11 hits.
Tuesday 8/16/1992: Bill Risley out for 4 weeks
DETROIT - Detroit is without its right-hander Bill Risley for at least 4 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Jose Canseco in a game against Boston. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Strained Elbow Ligament. Surgery will be performed next week. Opposing players hit .254 against Bill this season. While posting an ERA of 4.13 he went 4-3 in 0 starts, fanning 62 and walking 46 hitters.
