Thursday 9/1/1992: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
Danny Jackson couldn't have pitched much better than he did in August, and the American League thought so as well, naming the left-hander Pitcher of the Month. His ERA of just 1.09 helped him to a 6-0 record in August. He worked 49.1 innings, striking out 37 hitters while walking 14. Danny pitched a shutout as well. In 28 starts this year Danny struck out 121 batters in 194 innings of work. His ERA is 3.90, his record 14-10. Danny has pitched 2 shutouts and 3 complete games. San Francisco's Scott Garrelts had a terrific August, and it earned him the National League Pitcher of the month award. He struck out 43 hitters in his 6 starts, putting together a record of 5-0 while pitching 43 innings. His ERA in August was 0.99. Scott got two complete game shutouts as well! In 29 starts this year Scott struck out 170 batters in 219.2 innings of work. His ERA is 1.35, his record 22-2. He has 9 complete games and 7 shutouts. Chicago (A)'s first baseman Frank E. Thomas had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. He hit .392 with 21 RBI and slugged .608 in 102 at bats. He has hit 15 bombs while batting .336 this season. His 163 hits and 63 walks add up to a .415 on-base percentage. He's 2nd in the American League in batting and 6th in RBI! Barry Bonds of San Francisco wins his 2nd Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National League. He hit .436 with 31 RBI and slugged .772 in 101 at bats. He has hit 27 bombs while batting .338 this season. His 159 hits and 73 walks add up to a .427 on-base percentage. He's 2nd in the National League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 2nd in RBI!
Tuesday 8/30/1992: Montreal's Rex Hudler pounds five hits
HOUSTON - On Tuesday, Montreal's first baseman Rex Hudler displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Houston, punishing their pitchers with five hits. A RBI double off Marty Bystrom in the 2nd inning accounted for his 2nd hit. Number 4 in the 5th inning accounted for a double. His 5th hit, a two-run homerun off Don Gordon in the 7th inning, cleared the fence in left-center. He collected singles in the 1st inning and in the 3rd (one RBI). Rex scored one run, and he collected 4 RBI as well! He now has a total of 124 hits this season, accounting for a .240 batting average. Montreal improved its record to 57-75, scoring 17 runs on 19 hits.
Tuesday 8/30/1992: Ozzie Virgil Jr. out for 5-6 weeks
MONTREAL - Montreal's season took a blow when Ozzie Virgil Jr. suffered a serious injury in the game against Houston. He was hurt when ge got bowled over in a scary collision at home plate. Virgil Jr. will probaby miss 5-6 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Virgil Jr. was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Fractured Wrist. Ozzie is hitting .268 this year, with 113 hits in 422 at bats. He has driven in 46 runs, slugging .389.
Tuesday 8/30/1992: Walt Terrell quiets Oakland bats with shutout
CHICAGO (A) - Walt Terrell took the mound and never left. And Oakland hitters couldn't touch him at all. Chicago (A)'s right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 4th shutout of the season. He now has 24 career shutouts in 278 games started. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Terrell (16-6) struck out an astounding 14 and walked 2, throwing 79 of 125 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Chicago (A) was first baseman Jeff Reed, he collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate. Chicago (A) improved its record to 82-49, scoring 6 runs on 11 hits.
Monday 8/29/1992: Player of the Week honors go to Thomas and Wirth
The American League's best player of the week was Chicago (A)'s Frank E. Thomas, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Frank E. went 15 for 29 (.517), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 11 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to St. Louis' Alan Wirth this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. NEW YORK (A) - New York (A) is without its right-hander Mike Hartley for at least 5-6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Kenny Lofton in a game against Cleveland. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Bone Chips Shoulder. Opposing players hit .261 against Mike this season. While posting an ERA of 4.29 he went 3-7 in 0 starts, fanning 54 and walking 32 hitters.
