Thursday 9/15/1992: Bill Long (STL) will miss 5 weeks
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' ace Bill Long suffered a severe injury on Thursday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 3rd of the game against Cincinnati he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. St. Louis wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Long had suffered a Ruptured Tricep Tendon. Opposing players hit .240 against Bill this season. While posting an ERA of 2.31 he went 4-3 in 15 starts, fanning 93 and walking 23 hitters.
Thursday 9/15/1992: Mike A. Smith out for 6 weeks
TEXAS - When it rains, it pours. Texas' right-hander Mike A. Smith will not pitch for at least 6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Baltimore where he left the field in the 5th inning. Ruptured Bicep Tendon was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Smith compiled an ERA of 5.68, going 4-2 in 0 starts. He fanned 49 while giving up 70 hits in 71.1 innings.
Monday 9/12/1992: Houston's Magadan wins Player of the Week award
Boston's rightfielder Jeffrey Leonard had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Jeffrey was on fire, hitting .600 with 2 HR and 5 RBI. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Dave Magadan, Houston's starting third baseman. Dave pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .500 with 2 HR and 8 RBI while slugging .750. Magadan has hit 6 taters this year while batting .295. He adds 23 doubles, along with 49 runs scored.
