Aaron, Matthews, Lewis, Schneider and Billings welcomed a pair of new Hall of Excellence members. Long time Brewers 1st baseman and recent retiree Keith Hernandez, and joining him his longtime teammate, the first active player ever to join the hall Robin Yount.
"It seems like just yesterday I was shaking the hands of both of these men and welcome to the Brewers. Now here I am thanking them for all they have done for not just the Brewers but all of Milwaukee baseball." were the comments made by team owner Darryl Lierman as he kicked off the celebration. Speaking the the press scrum afterwards he spoke on how intertwined their Brewer careers were and why that fact made it clear they should be inducted together. " We nabbed Keith 6th overall in 72, and we followed that up by taking Robin 1st overall in 73. They were backbone of 6 playoff appearances and a team that was in the hunt every season they were together."
Hernandez began his Milwaukee career in 1975 and was with the team until he was dealt to aid White Sox in 1988 in their playoff hunt as the Brewers cleared space for current first baseman Tino Martinez. Hernandez finished up his career at the conclusion of the 1992 season having the spent the season chasing his 3000 hit as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays. Hernandez would get his 3000th hit in August a few months after his fellow inductee and longtime friend Yount collected his 3000th. Hernandez would make 5 All Star Games, 1 AL batting title, 4 Gold Gloves and a regular name in multiple leader board categories. 2655 G 3002 H 507 2B 254 HR 1589 RBI 1106 BB Career .303 BA
Selected first overall in 1973 in a draft that featured several other likely Hall of Famers was Robin Yount. Yount remains the only first overall pick of the Brewers franchise and he is now the first active player to be inducted into the Hall of Excellence. Drafted as shortstop, Yount moved to CF to replace Johnny Lewis and filled and followed in Johnny's Gold Glove foot steps. In addition to the 4 Gold Gloves on his resume Yount is a 5 time All Star, 2 time AL Batting title winner, and leads the Brewers franchise in pretty much every significant offensive category. " At this point I still feel I have a year or two more to contribute on the field but more importantly more I can teach the young guys who will be wearing the Brewers uniform going forward " remarked Yount when asked about his own potential retirement date. When he does he is a shoe in for the Hall of Fame thanks to current numbers like: 2782 G 3156 H 511 2B 105 3B 275 HR 1620 RBI 1701 R 623 SB.
