CALIFORNIA - When it rains, it pours. California's right-hander Mario Soto will not pitch for at least 4-5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Oakland where he left the field in the 1st inning. Herniated Disc Back was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His ERA of 3.65 helped him to a 0-0 record this year. He struck out 7 and walked 7 in 12.1 innings.

SAN DIEGO - San Diego's right-hander Luis Aquino will never forget this day. The 28-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against St. Louis on Saturday. Aquino (2-1) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 4. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' The hitting star for San Diego was leftfielder Rusty Greer, he went 1 for 3, homering once, and driving in 2 runs. San Diego improved its record to 8-3, scoring 2 runs on 5 hits.
Saturday 4/16/1993: Greg Maddux quiets Chicago (N) bats with shutout
CHICAGO (N) - Atlanta's right-hander Greg Maddux is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Chicago (N) found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Maddux 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 24th shutouts in his career. Maddux (3-0) struck out 7 and issued 2 BB, throwing 83 of 119 pitches for strikes. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Atlanta's centerfielder Dale Murphy finished with 3 hits in 4 AB, homering once, scoring two runs and driving in 3 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Maddux. Atlanta improved its record to 6-5, scoring 12 runs on 20 hits.

CALIFORNIA - On Friday, California's centerfielder Mike Devereaux displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Texas, punishing their pitchers with five hits. A pitch from Britt Burns in the 3rd inning left his bat for a triple. Number 5 in the 8th inning, a shot estimated at 369 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. MINNESOTA - It was a great day for Minnesota's right-hander Robb Nen. The 23-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Oakland on Sunday. Nen (1-1) fanned 9 and walked 4, throwing 114 pitches. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Minnesota's first baseman Mo Vaughn got 1 hit in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, and driving in 4 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Nen. CINCINNATI - Cincinnati is without its ace Ken Howell for at least 5-6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Steve Finley in a game against Philadelphia. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Bone Chips Shoulder. Surgery will be performed next week.
Sunday 4/3/1993: St. Louis' Terry Pendleton has great day, hits three longballs
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' shortstop Terry Pendleton flexed his muscles and displayed his tremendous power, homering three times in a 15-2 win over Pittsburgh. A pitch from Bob Ayrault in the 1st inning left his bat for a GRAND SLAM, landing 452 feet from home plate in center field. In the 4th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Dana Kiecker. His 3rd shot, a solo homerun off Frank Eufemia in the 8th inning, cleared the fence in center field. Overall he went 4 for 4, with FOUR runs scored and collecting 8 RBI. In 4913 career at bats, he has hit 177 homeruns and collected 718 RBI. Kevin Mitchell was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 6/6/1992. St. Louis scored 15 runs on 11 hits.
