Monday 4/25/1993: Cleveland's Burks wins Player of the Week award
Ellis Burks from Cleveland wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Ellis pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .450 with 3 HR and 11 RBI while slugging 1.050. Burks has hit for a .441 average this season. He has 12 extra base hits along with 56 total bases, resulting in a .824 slugging percentage. He's 1st in the American League in batting, 5th in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! It's the 6th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Chicago (N)'s second baseman Chico Walker. He hit .455 with 7 RBI and slugged 1.136 in 22 at bats. He now has homered in 4 consecutive games as well!
Saturday 4/23/1993: Mike Jeffcoat pitches 2-hit shutout against Minnesota
MINNESOTA - Great days are rare. But not for California's southpaw Mike Jeffcoat. Minnesota found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 18th time he has done it in his career. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Jeffcoat (2-2) struck out 4 and issued 2 BB, throwing 63 of 104 pitches for strikes. Ken Griffey Jr. helped Jeffcoat at the plate, he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, stroking a double. California improved its record to 11-6, scoring 2 runs on 8 hits.
Friday 4/22/1993: San Diego's Tim Raines Sr. slams three taters
CHICAGO (N) - Hitting a homerun is fine, but hitting three of them in one game is something special. San Diego's shortstop Tim Raines Sr. accomplished that feat in a 8-6 win over Chicago (N). A 440 foot drive to right-center marked his 1st bomb, a solo homerun off Scott Sanderson in the 4th inning. A pitch from Rich Monteleone in the 10th inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 429 feet from home plate in left field. His 3rd shot, off Jeff Parrett in the 11th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. Overall he collected 3 hits in 6 trips to the plate, scoring FOUR times and driving in 5 runs. In 8037 career at bats, he has hit 331 homeruns and collected 1129 RBI. The induction into the Hall of Fame is almost a sure thing for him now!
Thursday 4/21/1993: San Diego's Viola out for 7-8 weeks
SAN DIEGO - San Diego is without its left-hander Frank Viola for at least 7-8 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Willie Upshaw in a game against Cincinnati. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Herniated Disc Back was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. In 3 starts this year Frank struck out 7 batters in 17 innings of work. His ERA is 5.29, his record 1-0.
Monday 4/18/1993: Milwaukee's Heaton out for 5-6 weeks
MILWAUKEE - When it rains, it pours. Milwaukee's southpaw Neal Heaton will not pitch for at least 5-6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Seattle where he left the field in the 6th inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Tricep Muscle. Neal has a record of 0-2 this season, with an ERA of 3.18. In 17 Innings he was able to strike out 7 batters.
