So far so good for the Redbirds. They've got some high expectations, and maybe a little revenge on the mind, after last season was marred with injury after injury. One of those injuries had long term effects, as Fernando Valenzuela is finally getting his first start of the season. "We know he was healthy earlier, but we wanted to get him some time in AAA before we brought him back to the majors," said GM Matthew Carpenter. "He's on his way here and will take Ojeda's spot in the rotation now." In a corresponding move struggling veteran Atlee Hammaker has been demoted to AAA.
The Cardinals seem set on leaving rookie sensation Darryl Kile in the rotation at this point. "We've let him season enough in AAA, it's time to see what he can do in the bigs. With him and Quantrill, we think we've got 2 pretty good anchors in our rotation for a while," said Carpenter. "With the goal of resigning Morris this season, we feel our rotation can keep us in a majority of the games."
The offense is holding it's own right now. A few new additions, so we expected a little adjustment trying to figure out the lineup that works best for us. Terry Pendleton has come out swinging a very hot bat as well as Felix Jose, while battling a nagging injury, hitting right around 300 as well. Newcomer Mitch Webster started out hot, but has cooled off a bit average wise, is currently 2nd on the team with 7 HR.
We'll update you later on future moves that might be in the works for the Cardinals, but the biggest move they're worried about right now is putting more ground between them and the rival Cubs!
