Ron Gant from Toronto wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Ron was on fire, hitting .464 with 2 HR and 14 RBI. Ron managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. Ron has gone 37 for 118 (.314) this season, hitting 6 homeruns and driving in 32 runs. He has scored 23 runs on his own. HOUSTON - Houston's right-hander Paul Miller experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 6th inning of the game against New York (N), Miller complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Miller was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Ruptured Disc Back. This season Miller compiled an ERA of 3.63, going 1-3 in 6 starts. He fanned 20 while giving up 34 hits in 34.2 innings.
Saturday 5/7/1993: California's Griffey Jr. severely injured
CALIFORNIA - California's Ken Griffey Jr. suffered a serious injury Saturday in a game against Kansas City. Griffey Jr. fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 6-7 weeks. Strained Posterior Cruciate Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Griffey Jr. has hit for a .267 average this season. He has 15 extra base hits along with 54 total bases, resulting in a .466 slugging percentage.
