KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's pitcher Kevin Appier was part of a scary incident that saw the right-hander being hit by a line drive in the 5th inning of the game between Kansas City and Chicago (A). Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Appier will miss about 7 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Fractured Cheekbone which will require surgery. In 8 starts this year Kevin struck out 28 batters in 38 innings of work. His ERA is 5.45, his record 2-3.
Monday 5/16/1993: 6-hit performance by Cincinnati's Fred Manrique
PITTSBURGH - 'Wow, six hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said Cincinnati's shortstop Fred Manrique after the 27-1 win over Pittsburgh. His 4th hit, a three-run homerun off Terry Leach in the 6th inning, cleared the fence in left field. His 6th hit, a solo homerun off Steve K. Davis in the 9th inning, landed an estimated 406 feet from home plate. He had singles in the 3rd inning (two RBIs) , in the 4th (one RBI) , in the 5th (two RBIs) and in the 7th . Fred scored 5 runs, and he collected 9 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 47 hits in 152 at bats, resulting in a .309 batting average.
Monday 5/16/1993: Incaviglia and Gibson win Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Detroit's Pete Incaviglia, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. Pete went 12 for 20 (.600), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 9 RBI. The National League's best player of the week was Montreal's Kirk Gibson, who wins the award for the 7th time in his career. He hit .526 with 10 RBI and slugged .895 in 19 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 8 games. Kirk is hitting .364 this year, with 52 hits in 143 at bats. He has driven in 24 runs, slugging .510. He's 6th in the National League in batting!
Wednesday 5/11/1993: Scott Garrelts pitches his 1st shutout of the season
MINNESOTA - Scott Garrelts had some fun again. Chicago (A) hitters did not. Minnesota's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 13 career shutouts in 299 games started. Garrelts (6-1) struck out 5 and walked none, throwing 71 of 121 pitches for strikes. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Jim Edmonds helped Garrelts at the plate, he finished with 2 hits in 3 AB. Minnesota scored 6 runs on 10 hits.

OAKLAND - Great days are rare. But not for Detroit's left-hander Jamie Moyer. Oakland found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 10th time he has done it in his career. Moyer (5-3) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 3, throwing 125 pitches. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Ken Dowell provided Detroit with the offense Moyer needed as he stroked 3 hits in 5 AB, homering once, scoring 2 runs with 5 RBI. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Wednesday 5/11/1993: Tom Candiotti out for 6 weeks
OAKLAND - Oakland is without its right-hander Tom Candiotti for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Ken Dowell in a game against Detroit. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Torn Bicep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. In 7 starts this year Tom struck out 21 batters in 37 innings of work. His ERA is 4.62, his record 2-0.
