Then they ended and May arrived. The Redbirds are 6-9 this month, only winning 1 of the last 9 games.
"I guess it's time for a shakeup," said GM Carpenter. "We were playing well and hesitant to make changes, but that's over with. Almost losing 10 in a row is a cause for worry this early in the season. I know we're only 3 games out, but the division is looking competitive this year with 4 teams within 5 games of 1st place."
Expect some changes in the rotation and lineups judging by other comments Carpenter made after we were through. The biggest questions in the rotation at this point are rookie sensation Darryl Kile and usual ace Morris Madden. While no one could comprehend removing Madden from the rotation at this point, the Cards do have Bob Tewksbury and Bill Long both throwing very well out of the bullpen. "Don't be surprised to see one of them in the rotation soon, if not both," chirped Carpenter. "Gotta keep the dog in the fight this early in the season."
Offensively the disappointment of the season so far has been veteran 1B Lorenzo Gray. Picked up in a trade late in the season from their I-70 neighbors the Royals, he hit well down the stretch and the Birds were hopeful he'd continue this season strong. Hitting 262 in March/April was serviceable because he was drawing walks and getting on base. May has been a pit for his average. Hovering around 200, he's expecting to get dropped in the lineup. "I know I'm struggling to hit the ball and I'm not sure why," said Gray. "I'll be disappointed if I get dropped in the lineup, but as a veteran I do understand."
So to wrap things up, don't be surprised to see a shakeup in the Redbirds lineup I would fully expect veteran Bill Long to take Kile's spot in the rotation, but I have no definite confirmation from the organization.
"We'll see" snapped the frustrated GM as he left the media room.
Stay tuned. It's already hot in St Louis....and summer isn't even here!
