It's the 2nd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Minnesota's rightfielder Harold Baines. In 27 at bats he hit .556 with 3 HR and 10 RBI. The National League's best player of the week was Cincinnati's Fred Manrique, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. He hit .552 with 18 RBI and slugged 1.172 in 29 at bats.
Friday 5/20/1993: Scott Sanderson quiets New York (N) bats with shutout
NEW YORK (N) - Scott Sanderson had some fun again. New York (N) hitters did not. Chicago (N)'s right-hander gave up just one hit in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 37 career shutouts in 458 games started. Sanderson (6-2) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 9. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Andres Galarraga provided Chicago (N) with the offense Sanderson needed as he got 2 hits in 4 AB, stroking a double. Chicago (N) improved its record to 26-15, scoring 2 runs on 9 hits.

TORONTO - Kevin Brown took the mound and never left. And Kansas City hitters couldn't touch him at all. Toronto's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 18 career shutouts in 228 games started. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' Brown (5-2) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 8. Gary Sheffield helped Brown at the plate, he collected 1 hit in 2 trips to the plate. Toronto improved its record to 24-17, scoring 4 runs on 3 hits.

SEATTLE - Minnesota's right-hander Scott Garrelts is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Seattle on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 14th time he has done it in his career. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Garrelts (8-1) struck out 6 and issued 2 BB, throwing 67 of 114 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Minnesota was The final score of the game was 6-0.
