ST. LOUIS - San Diego's Terry Mulholland drilled St. Louis' first baseman Lorenzo Gray in the 6th inning. He was slow getting up and had to leave the game. Lorenzo Gray will miss at least 6 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Fractured Hand. He has hit 2 longballs while batting .249 this season. His 42 hits and 18 walks add up to a .325 on-base percentage.
Wednesday 6/1/1993: Seattle's Hershiser earns Pitcher of the Month award
Seattle's Orel Hershiser had a terrific May, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He started 6 games in May, going 4-1 and compiling an ERA of 1.11 in 48.2 innings. Orel fanned 44 hitters. Orel pitched a shutout as well. In 10 starts this year Orel struck out 76 batters in 82.2 innings of work. His ERA is 1.42, his record 6-1. Orel has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 4th in wins! Winner of this months National League Pitcher of the Month award is Atlanta's Don Robinson. The American League's best player of the month was Chicago (A)'s Joe Carter, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Joe was on fire, hitting .400 with 6 homeruns and 29 RBI. This year Carter drove in 46 and scored 44 runs while batting .346 with 11 longballs. He's 1st in the American League in batting, 7th in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! Fred Manrique of Cincinnati wins his 1st Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National League. Fred was on fire, hitting .345 with 13 homeruns and 33 RBI. Manrique has hit for a .316 average this season. He has 27 extra base hits along with 127 total bases, resulting in a .617 slugging percentage. He's 3rd in the National League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns!
Tuesday 5/31/1993: Bernie F. Williams on fire, laces six hits
NEW YORK (A) - Chicago (A)'s rightfielder Bernie F. Williams once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up New York (A)'s pitching staff with a 6 hit performance on Tuesday. His 5th hit was a two-run triple off Greg Cadaret in the 9th inning. He collected singles in the 1st , in the 2nd inning , in the 5th (two RBIs) , in the 6th inning and in the 9th inning (two RBIs). Bernie F. did drive in 7 while scoring 7 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 72 hits in 213 at bats, resulting in a .338 batting average. The final score of the game was 52-3.
Tuesday 5/31/1993: Joe Carter uncorks seven hits against New York (A)
NEW YORK (A) - Joe Carter is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 7 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. A two-run double off Mel Rojas in the 2nd inning accounted for his 2nd hit. Number 3 in the 5th inning, a shot estimated at 411 feet, cleared the wall in right-center. His 6th cleared the based, a three-run double off Greg Cadaret in the 9th inning. He collected singles in the 1st (one RBI) , in the 6th (one RBI) , in the 8th and in the 9th inning (two RBIs). Joe scored 7 runs, and he collected 11 RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .346. Chicago (A) scored 52 runs on 28 hits.
Tuesday 5/31/1993: Brady Anderson out for full season
OAKLAND - Oakland's leftfielder Brady Anderson will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Oakland and Baltimore. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Anderson collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. After being taken to a local hospital, Anderson was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Broken Ankle. Brady has gone 52 for 196 (.265) this season, hitting 8 longballs and driving in 28 runs. He has scored 30 runs on his own.
Monday 5/30/1993: Vaughn (MIN) and McGriff (LAN) win P.O.W. award
Minnesota's first baseman Mo Vaughn had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Vaughn helped his team with an average of .429 and 9 RBI in 21 at bats. His season numbers are: .282 AVG, 49 hits, 13 doubles, one triple and 10 taters, along with 40 RBI and 29 runs scored. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Los Angeles (N)'s Fred McGriff this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Saturday 5/28/1993: John Smiley out for 5 weeks
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's southpaw John Smiley suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 1st of the game against St. Louis he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Strained Back Muscle which will require surgery. This season Smiley compiled an ERA of 3.28, going 2-3 in 11 starts. He fanned 35 while giving up 45 hits in 46.2 innings.
Wednesday 5/25/1993: Arthur Rhodes pitches his 1st shutout of the season
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's left-hander Arthur Rhodes will never forget this day. The 23-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Detroit on Wednesday. Rhodes (3-6) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 2, throwing 112 pitches. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Baltimore's first baseman Mark Grace got 3 hits in 4 AB, stroking a double, with 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Rhodes. Baltimore scored 9 runs on 15 hits.
