Monday 6/13/1993: Martinez and Wirth win Player of the Week award
Edgar Martinez wins his 4th Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Edgar pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .593 with 2 HR and 9 RBI while slugging .889. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 13 game hitting streak right now. It's the 4th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to St. Louis' pitcher Alan Wirth. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.60 while going 2-0. Sunday 6/12/1993: Florida has no chance in a 2-hitter by Erik Hanson
HOUSTON - Houston's right-hander Erik Hanson is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Florida on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 3rd time he has done it in his career. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Hanson (4-3) struck out 4 and issued 1 BB, throwing 58 of 93 pitches for strikes. Todd Haney helped Hanson at the plate, he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, and collecting 2 RBI. Houston scored 4 runs on 9 hits.
Friday 6/10/1993: Philadelphia's Phillips severely injured
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's rightfielder Tony Phillips will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Philadelphia and St. Louis. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Phillips collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Philadelphia wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Phillips had suffered a Torn Hamstring Muscle. His season features a batting average of .292 (56 hits in 192 AB), 18 doubles, one triple and one bomb.
