HOUSTON - Houston is without its right-hander Erik Hanson for at least 7 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Bip Roberts in a game against Chicago (N). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being taken to a local hospital, Hanson was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Pulled Tricep Muscle. This season Hanson compiled an ERA of 2.79, going 5-3 in 15 starts. He fanned 48 while giving up 79 hits in 93.2 innings. He has one complete game and one shutout.
Wednesday 6/22/1993: Philadelphia's Trammell out for 6 weeks
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's season took a blow when Alan Trammell suffered a serious injury in the game against Pittsburgh. He hurt his arm throwing a strike to first base. Trammell will probaby miss 6 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Spasms Back. Surgery will be performed next week. Trammell has hit 4 bombs this year while batting .251. He adds 8 doubles, along with 26 runs scored.
Tuesday 6/21/1993: Montreal's Ozzie Virgil Jr. laces 2000th career hit
MONTREAL - Montreal's catcher Ozzie Virgil Jr. joined some elite company today, collecting his 2000th career hit! His hit in the 8th inning was a single off Steve Shifflett. In 13 years of big league action so far, Ozzie has compiled a batting average of .288, along with 305 homeruns and 976 RBI. 'My firends always told me that I will do it one day. I never believed it. Good that I was wrong!'
Tuesday 6/21/1993: Toronto's Russell severely injured
TORONTO - Toronto's right-hander Jeff Russell suffered a severe injury on Tuesday and will be out for at least 7 weeks. In the 3rd of the game against Detroit he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Bone Chips Shoulder was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Russell compiled an ERA of 2.40, going 8-3 in 15 starts. He fanned 78 while giving up 76 hits in 101.1 innings.
Tuesday 6/21/1993: Oakland's Greer out for full season
OAKLAND - Oakland's centerfielder Brian Greer suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself diving for a ball. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Ruptured Disc Back which will require surgery. He has hit 3 taters while batting .266 this season. His 58 hits and 28 walks add up to a .350 on-base percentage.
Monday 6/20/1993: Pecota and Lowry win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Bill Pecota, Texas' starting second baseman. He had an on base percentage of .542 and hit .545, while driving in 12 runs. Dwight Lowry wins his 1st Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He hit .500 with 7 RBI and slugged .833 in 18 at bats.
