Thursday 7/21/1993: Montreal's Rafael Palmeiro slams three taters
MONTREAL - Hitting homeruns is one of the most difficult things in sports. To hit three of them in one game is almost sensational. Montreal's first baseman Rafael Palmeiro accomplished that feat in a 18-3 win over New York (N). His 1st blast, a GRAND SLAM off Gary Mielke in the 3rd inning, landed an estimated 337 feet from home plate. Number 2 in the 4th inning, a shot estimated at 472 feet, cleared the wall in center field. In the 8th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Victor Cruz. Overall he finished with 3 hits in 4 AB, with three runs scored and driving in 10 runs. The final score of the game was 18-3.
Thursday 7/21/1993: Mike J. Ramsey (KCR) will miss 9-10 weeks
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's centerfielder Mike J. Ramsey hurt himself in the 5th inning while diving for a batted ball. He got up slowly and had to leave the game. Mike J. Ramsey will miss at least 9-10 weeks. Ramsey was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Fractured Hip. He has hit no homeruns while batting .260 this season. His 54 hits and 27 walks add up to a .345 on-base percentage.
Wednesday 7/20/1993: Cincinnati's Gilkey out for 6 weeks
CINCINNATI - Being hit with a pitch is no fun at all. Especially when you get injured. Cincinnati's rightfielder Bernard Gilkey will miss about 6 weeks after being hit by Mike York in the 4th inning of the game between Cincinnati and Colorado. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Broken Cheekbone. While compiling an on base percentage of .332, Bernard hit .256 and slugged .440. He has collected 56 runs batted in this year.
Wednesday 7/20/1993: Mo Vaughn parks three against New York (A)
NEW YORK (A) - Mo Vaughn beat New York (A), but he did it without mercy, playing like a one man wrecking crew. Minnesota's first baseman slugged three homeruns, once again proving that he is among the elite sluggers. In the 2nd inning he unloaded a solo homerun off David Wells. Number 2 in the 3rd inning, a shot estimated at 351 feet, cleared the wall in right field. His 3rd shot, a solo homerun off Mike Hartley in the 5th inning, cleared the fence in left-center. Mo collected 4 hits in 5 trips to the plate, stroking a double, scoring three runs and collecting 4 RBI. Tim Raines Sr. was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 4/22/1993. Minnesota scored 10 runs on 14 hits.
Tuesday 7/19/1993: Alan Wirth blanks San Francisco with a 1-hitter
ST. LOUIS - Alan Wirth had some fun again. San Francisco hitters did not. St. Louis' right-hander gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 14 career shutouts in 358 games started. Darryl Strawberry spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he singled with no outs in the 5th inning. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Wirth (6-10) fanned 6 and walked 4, throwing 107 pitches. St. Louis' centerfielder Mitch Webster collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, blasting a homerun, stroking a double, and collecting 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Wirth. St. Louis improved its record to 47-46, scoring 7 runs on 9 hits.
Monday 7/18/1993: Castilla and Deer win Player of the Week award
California's second baseman Vinny Castilla had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Vinny was on fire, hitting .458 with 3 HR and 9 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 8 games. Vinny is hitting .293 this year, with 89 hits in 304 at bats. He has driven in 58 runs, slugging .582. SAN FRANCISCO - Los Angeles (N)'s right-hander Tom Gordon will never forget this day. The 25-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against San Francisco on Friday. Gordon (9-4) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 2, throwing 123 pitches. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Luis Alicea provided Los Angeles (N) with the offense Gordon needed as he stroked 2 hits in 5 AB, blasting a homerun, scoring three times with 4 RBI. Los Angeles (N) improved its record to 57-33, scoring 9 runs on 12 hits.
Friday 7/15/1993: Ramon J. Martinez out for 4-5 weeks
