Friday 7/29/1993: Toronto's Ron Gant slams five hits
CLEVELAND - Ron Gant hits 'em where they ain't. Cleveland certainly agrees as Toronto's second baseman unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. His 1st hit was a RBI double off Ed Wojna in the 1st inning. A pitch from Ed Wojna in the 2nd inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 416 feet from home plate in left field. Number 3 in the 4th inning accounted for a double. He collected singles in the 8th inning and in the 9th inning (one RBI). Ron scored 4 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! He now has a total of 104 hits this season, accounting for a .279 batting average. The final score of the game was 18-2.
Tuesday 7/26/1993: Clint Hurdle ropes 2000th career hit
MILWAUKEE - Oakland's Clint Hurdle showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Milwaukee on Tuesday. With one out in the 9th inning, Clint drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. His best year so far was 1987 where he hit .336 with 27 homeruns and 89 RBI. 'Baseball is a great game, and adding something to it's history is smething I've always wanted. What a great day!'
Monday 7/25/1993: Kansas City's Burke out for full season
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's right-hander Tim Burke will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against Texas on Monday. After being taken to a local hospital, Burke was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Torn Back Muscle. Opposing players hit .311 against Tim this season. While posting an ERA of 5.50 he went 2-3 in 0 starts, fanning 44 and walking 23 hitters.
Monday 7/25/1993: Montreal's Palmeiro wins Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to California's Jeff Peterek this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Peterek was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 14 in 18 innings. He pitched two shutouts! Opposing players hit .202 against Jeff this season. While posting an ERA of 2.63 he went 14-6 in 22 starts, fanning 114 and walking 70 hitters. Jeff has pitched 3 shutouts and 8 complete games. He's 9th in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! Rafael Palmeiro wins his 1st Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Palmeiro helped his team with an average of .375 and 19 RBI in 24 at bats. This year Palmeiro drove in 67 and scored 69 runs while batting .260 with 19 longballs.

PITTSBURGH - San Francisco's catcher Rich Gedman once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Pittsburgh's pitching staff with a 6 hit performance on Saturday. His 1st hit, a two-run homerun off Dan Schatzeder in the 2nd inning, landed an estimated 370 feet from home plate. A pitch from Terry Leach in the 3rd inning left his bat for a double. In the 9th inning he belted a three-run double off Orlando Isales. He had singles in the 4th inning , in the 5th inning and in the 7th inning . Rich scored 4 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! He is hitting .280 this season, with 16 HR and 63 RBI. The final score of the game was 24-2.
