Larry Walker from Texas wins his 5th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Walker helped his team with an average of .548 and 11 RBI in 31 at bats. His season numbers are: .255 AVG, 106 hits, 29 doubles, no triples and 25 homeruns, along with 75 RBI and 69 runs scored. Philadelphia's third baseman Hiromi Matsunaga had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. In 29 at bats he hit .414 with 5 HR and 9 RBI.
Friday 8/5/1993: Tony Gwynn Sr. has 2000th career hits
PHILADELPHIA - Tony Gwynn Sr. got a standing ovation from 38374 fans in Philadelphia, who witnessed his 2000th career hit. His best year so far was 1992 where he hit .325 with 10 homeruns and 76 RBI. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!' With one out in the 4th inning, Tony drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd.
Friday 8/5/1993: Jeff Calhoun NO-HITS San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO - Atlanta's left-hander Jeff Calhoun made some history today, firing a no-hitter against San Francisco. Their hitters found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, never having a chance against his overpowering stuff. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches. I'm so happy that it was enough to pitch such a great game.' Calhoun (7-7) fanned 7 and walked 4, throwing 99 pitches. The hitting star for Atlanta was rightfielder Stan Javier, he got 2 hits in 4 AB, with 3 RBI. Atlanta improved its record to 68-41, scoring 4 runs on 7 hits.
Wednesday 8/3/1993: Hiromi Matsunaga knocks lights out with three homeruns
NEW YORK (N) - Philadelphia beat New York (N) 10-4, but that was not the real story of the game. Hiromi Matsunaga was, as he went deep three times. His 1st shot, a two-run homerun off Doug Brocail in the 1st inning, cleared the fence in left field. A 394 foot drive to right-center marked his 2nd bomb, a two-run homerun off Doug Brocail in the 6th inning. A pitch from Todd Revenig in the 7th inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 433 feet from home plate in left-center. Overall he stroked 3 hits in 5 AB, scoring three runs and driving in 6 runs. His homerun total this year is 21, along with 66 RBI.
Wednesday 8/3/1993: Tom Henke fires 2-hitter against Baltimore
BALTIMORE - Tom Henke took the mound and never left. And Baltimore hitters couldn't touch him at all. Seattle's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 10 career shutouts in 315 games started. Henke (14-2) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking none, throwing 100 pitches. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Dave Henderson provided Seattle with the offense Henke needed as he finished 1 for 1. The final score of the game was 1-0.
