BOSTON - Boston's right-hander Mark Grant suffered a severe injury on Monday and will be out for at least 7 weeks. In the 7th of the game against Cleveland he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Grant was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Pulled Bicep Muscle. Mark has a record of 1-6 this season, with an ERA of 5.61. In 43.1 Innings he was able to strike out 41 batters.
Monday 8/22/1993: Eddie Murray has 3000th career hits
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's players had every reason to congratulate Eddie Murray, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 3000th career hit! Along with his 3000 hits, Eddie collected 420 homeruns and 1667 RBI in 17 seasons. 'I'm out of words. I'll probably realize it tomorrow, but for now I'm done.' His hit in the 8th inning was a single off Frank DiPino. It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame!

Tom Candiotti of Oakland wins his 1st Player of the Week award for dominating American League's hitters the entire week. Candiotti was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 7 in 18 innings. He pitched two shutouts! In 16 starts this year Tom struck out 54 batters in 100.1 innings of work. His ERA is 3.95, his record 7-4. PITTSBURGH - Philadelphia's catcher Erik Pappas accomplished a difficult feat in a 30-6 win over Pittsburgh, drilling six hits to improve his career batting average to .245! His 3rd hit, a solo homerun off Frank Eufemia in the 5th inning, cleared the fence in left-center. In the 7th inning he belted a RBI double off Dan Schatzeder. He had singles in the 1st inning (one RBI) , in the 3rd , in the 5th inning (one RBI) and in the 6th . Erik did drive in 5 while scoring 3 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 62 hits in 201 at bats, resulting in a .308 batting average. The final score of the game was 30-6.

DETROIT - Detroit is without its ace Ron Robinson for at least 5-6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Matt Merullo in a game against Baltimore. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Herniated Disc Back. Surgery will be performed next week. In 27 starts this year Ron struck out 120 batters in 196.1 innings of work. His ERA is 3.30, his record 14-8. He has 5 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 7th in the American League in wins!

MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's pitcher Mike Witt was part of a scary incident that saw the right-hander being hit by a line drive in the 8th inning of the game between Milwaukee and Chicago (A). Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Witt will miss about 6-7 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Fractured Cheekbone. Surgery will be performed next week. This season Witt compiled an ERA of 5.14, going 10-12 in 24 starts. He fanned 144 while giving up 175 hits in 150.2 innings. He has 4 complete games and 2 shutouts.

CALIFORNIA - California's right-hander Jeff Peterek is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Seattle on just 2 hits. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 13th time he has done it in his career. Peterek (17-7) struck out 7 and issued 4 BB, throwing 62 of 117 pitches for strikes. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Vinny Castilla provided California with the offense Peterek needed as he went 3 for 4, hitting a double. MONTREAL - Montreal's catcher Ozzie Virgil Jr. will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Montreal and Florida. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Virgil Jr. collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Torn Abdominal Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. He has hit 12 homeruns while batting .323 this season. His 124 hits and 46 walks add up to a .400 on-base percentage. He's 5th in the National League in batting!
