MONTREAL - Montreal is without its ace Kevin Hagen for at least 9 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Todd Haney in a game against Houston. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Hagen was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Strained Tricep Muscle. His ERA of 3.92 helped him to a 13-9 record this year. He struck out 187 and walked 25 in 197.1 innings. He has 3 complete games and one shutout.
Monday 9/5/1993: Luis Aquino blanks Colorado with a 2-hitter
SAN DIEGO - Great days are rare. But not for San Diego's right-hander Luis Aquino. Colorado found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 3rd time he has done it in his career. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Aquino (11-9) fanned 3 and walked 1, throwing 102 pitches. Rusty Greer provided San Diego with the offense Aquino needed as he finished 1 for 3, blasting a homerun, and driving in 3 runs. San Diego scored 3 runs on 4 hits.
Monday 9/5/1993: Dan Petry fires 2-hitter against Detroit
DETROIT - Seattle's right-hander Dan Petry is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Detroit found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Petry 5th shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 44th shutouts in his career. Petry (15-9) struck out 8 and walked 2, throwing 73 of 123 pitches for strikes. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Edgar Martinez provided Seattle with the offense Petry needed as he collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate, hitting a homerun, and driving in 3 runs. Seattle improved its record to 88-48, scoring 7 runs on 9 hits.
Monday 9/5/1993: Ventura (DET) and Horner (ATL) win P.O.W. award
Robin Ventura wins his 1st Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He hit .421 with 10 RBI and slugged 1.053 in 19 at bats. His season features a batting average of .337 (157 hits in 466 AB), 22 doubles, 2 triples and 27 homeruns. Ventura collected 80 RBI and 100 runs as well. He's 3rd in the American League in batting! It's the 7th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Atlanta's first baseman Bob Horner. Bob pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .429 with 3 HR and 7 RBI while slugging 1.048. While compiling an on base percentage of .384, Bob hit .301 and slugged .557. He has collected 75 runs batted in this year.
Sunday 9/4/1993: Dale Murphy collects 2000th hit against Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH - Atlanta's Dale Murphy showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Pittsburgh on Sunday. In 14 years of big league action so far, Dale has compiled a batting average of .259, along with 289 homeruns and 1137 RBI. 'I'm out of words. I'll probably realize it tomorrow, but for now I'm done.' His hit in the 14th inning was a single off Terry Leach.
Thursday 9/1/1993: Lou Whitaker socks five hits for Los Angeles (N)
MONTREAL - On Thursday, Los Angeles (N)'s shortstop Lou Whitaker displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Montreal, punishing their pitchers with five hits. A pitch from Kevin Hagen in the 1st inning left his bat for a double. Number 2 in the 2nd inning accounted for a double. His 3rd hit, a three-run homerun off Marty Bystrom in the 3rd inning, cleared the fence in left field. A double off Bryn Smith in the 6th inning accounted for his 4th hit. Number 5 in the 8th inning, a shot estimated at 420 feet, cleared the wall in right field. Lou scored 4 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! ATLANTA - Atlanta's right-hander John Smoltz is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking St. Louis on just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 20th time he has done it in his career. Felix Jose spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he doubled with no outs in the 5th inning. Smoltz (14-7) struck out 5 and issued 1 BB, throwing 79 of 124 pitches for strikes. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Atlanta's first baseman Bob Horner finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, blasting a homerun, doubling once, scoring two runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Smoltz. The final score of the game was 4-0.
