The New York Mets have a new ownership group and they looked to make a draft day move and a splash in free agency even before the boxes in the front office had been unpacked. The new owners traded down in the first round, bringing 19 year old LF Hideki Matsui to AAA Norfolk and then grabbing CL Keith Foulke with the 7th pick overall pick. The big story of the off season was how the new ownership had to rebuild a completely depleted MLB roster. They took over the team with a decimated pitching staff and a handful of MLB ready fielders. The one commodity they did have was money with only 9.5 million in committed contracts prior to the start of Free Agency. The Mets sat out the early days of FA but showed up in time to make offers on day 9 after ATT showed up to set up their internet in the new office. Management was drooling as they nearly landed Sid Fernandez but Fernandez took the same offer from the Twins instead. Bob Ojeda, 36, was signed towards the end of free agency as a consolation prize and looks to be the veteran presence with fellow FA Mike Griffin, on a staff that desperately needs to eat up innings this year. Ray Fontenot also joined the starting 5 which should be pretty solid 1-4. However, the 5th rotation spot is up for grabs and the question then becomes how will they get to newly acquired closer Bruce Hurst. The bullpen looks to cause a lot of sleepless nights for Mets fans this year.
The Mets hoped to acquire more hitting through free agency but believe they have done enough to improve on 1993's 114 loss season which saw them finishing 52 games out of first place. Fan favorites C Mike Piazza and 2B Eric Young Sr are joined by All-Star OF Bob Skube, 1B Greg Brock, OF Andre David, SS Kent Anderson in what fans hope can prove to be an above average lineup.
Spring is always a time for optimism in the hearts of baseball fans but Mets fans know the cupboards were pretty bare and the greatest hope is that the new ownership, known for turning franchises around, can work similar magic in the Big Apple. Most fans believe that the roster will be constantly evolving after June 1st but look forward to seeing if they can overachieve in a season where .500 looks like a lofty goal.
