Saturday 5/21/1994: Steve Avery shuts out Florida on 2 hits
FLORIDA - Steve Avery made some history on Saturday by pitching a shutout in his first big-league start. Cincinnati's southpaw baffled Florida all day, allowing only 2 hits. What a way to begin a career! 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Avery (1-0) struck out 8 and issued 1 BB, throwing 63 of 97 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Cincinnati was centerfielder Bip Roberts, he went 2 for 4, scoring 2 runs and collecting 2 RBI. Cincinnati improved its record to 22-20, scoring 9 runs on 15 hits.
Wednesday 5/18/1994: Ray Fontenot out for 5 weeks
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N) is without its left-hander Ray Fontenot for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Jerry Goff in a game against Los Angeles (N). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being taken to a local hospital, Fontenot was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Ruptured Elbow Ligament. His ERA of 5.54 helped him to a 1-5 record this year. He struck out 8 and walked 6 in 39 innings.
