Wednesday 6/1/1994: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
Dan Petry pitched like a legend in May, and the American League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He had an ERA of just 0.82 in 44 innings of work in which he struck out 31 hitters. His record in May is 3-1. Dan pitched a shutout as well. His ERA of 0.93 helped him to a 6-2 record this year. He struck out 67 and walked 11 in 87 innings. Dan has pitched 3 shutouts and 6 complete games. Atlanta's Don Robinson had a terrific May, and it earned him the National League Pitcher of the month award. His record of 5-0 in 6 was among the leagues best this month. In 45.1 innings of work he allowed just 28 hits while striking out 26, compiling an ERA of just 0.99. Don got two complete game shutouts as well! His ERA of 1.99 helped him to a 7-3 record this year. He struck out 40 and walked 14 in 86 innings. Don has pitched 2 shutouts and 3 complete games. He's 4th in the National League in ERA and 3rd in wins!
Wednesday 6/1/1994: Boston's Ramirez earns Batter of the Month award
The American League Batter of the Month award goes to Manny Ramirez, Boston's starting designated hitter. Manny went 42 for 105 (.400), while hitting 6 HR and collecting 28 RBI. Manny has gone 64 for 193 (.332) this season, hitting 7 bombs and driving in 32 runs. He has scored 27 runs on his own. He's 10th in the American League in batting! It's the 2nd time that the National League Batter of the Month award goes to Los Angeles (N)'s first baseman Fred McGriff. Fred was on fire, hitting .336 with 9 homeruns and 32 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .396, Fred hit .335 and slugged .582. He has collected 49 runs batted in this year.
Monday 5/30/1994: Kansas City's O'Neill wins Player of the Week award
Paul O'Neill wins his 1st Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Paul went 13 for 23 (.565), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 10 RBI. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Philadelphia's Jeff King this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .481 with 10 RBI and slugged 1.000 in 27 at bats. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. His season numbers are: .281 AVG, 54 hits, 17 doubles, 4 triples and 5 taters, along with 31 RBI and 32 runs scored.
Sunday 5/29/1994: St. Louis' Mitch Webster slams five hits
PITTSBURGH - Mitch Webster hits 'em where they ain't. Pittsburgh certainly agrees as St. Louis' centerfielder unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. His 1st hit was a double off Jack Morris in the 1st inning. His 2nd hit, a solo homerun off Jack Morris in the 3rd inning, landed an estimated 405 feet from home plate. A double off Frank Eufemia in the 5th inning accounted for his 3rd hit. Number 5 in the 9th inning accounted for a two-run double. He collected a single in the 6th, driving in one run. Mitch scored 3 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .287. St. Louis improved its record to 30-20, scoring 19 runs on 24 hits.
Sunday 5/29/1994: Kansas City's Paul O'Neill slams five hits
KANSAS CITY - Paul O'Neill led Kansas City to a 12-7 win over Boston by squeezing five hits out of his bat. A pitch from Mark Grant in the 1st inning left his bat for a double. A pitch from Mark Grant in the 3rd inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 428 feet from home plate in right field. A pitch from Brian Denman in the 6th inning left his bat for a two-run double. He collected singles in the 5th inning (one RBI) and in the 7th (one RBI). Paul did drive in 5 while scoring 3 runs on his own. His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .285.
Friday 5/27/1994: Fernando Valenzuela pitches his 3rd shutout of the season
PITTSBURGH - St. Louis' left-hander Fernando Valenzuela is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Pittsburgh found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Valenzuela 3rd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 19th shutouts in his career. Valenzuela (5-3) fanned 8 and walked 1, throwing 94 pitches. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Terry Pendleton provided St. Louis with the offense Valenzuela needed as he finished with 3 hits in 6 AB, hitting two dingers, scoring two runs with 4 RBI. St. Louis scored 13 runs on 19 hits.
