LOS ANGELES (N) - Hitting homeruns is one of the most difficult things in sports. To hit three of them in one game is almost sensational. Los Angeles (N)'s second baseman Luis Alicea accomplished that feat in a 14-4 win over New York (N). Number 1 in the 2nd inning, a shot estimated at 427 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. His 2nd blast, a two-run homerun off Carlos Perez in the 3rd inning, landed an estimated 418 feet from home plate. A pitch from Dave Von Ohlen in the 8th inning left his bat for a GRAND SLAM, landing 422 feet from home plate in right-center. Overall he collected 3 hits in 5 trips to the plate, with three runs scored with 8 RBI. Los Angeles (N) improved its record to 33-24, scoring 14 runs on 17 hits.
Monday 6/6/1994: Oakland's Chiamparino severely injured
OAKLAND - When it rains, it pours. Oakland's right-hander Scott Chiamparino will not pitch for at least 4-5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Texas where he left the field in the 9th inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Back Muscle. This season Chiamparino compiled an ERA of 6.00, going 1-4 in 0 starts. He fanned 24 while giving up 34 hits in 27 innings.
Monday 6/6/1994: Chicago (A)'s Fielder wins Player of the Week award
Chicago (A)'s first baseman Cecil Fielder had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He hit .519 with 10 RBI and slugged 1.037 in 27 at bats. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 9 game hitting streak right now. Cecil is hitting .336 this year, with 73 hits in 217 at bats. He has driven in 45 runs, slugging .535. He's 8th in the American League in batting and 5th in RBI! It's the 8th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Montreal's leftfielder Kirk Gibson. Friday 6/3/1994: Kirk Gibson hits for the cycle against Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH - Montreal's leftfielder Kirk Gibson accomplished a difficult feat in a game against Pittsburgh, hitting for the cycle to improve his career batting average to .295! His 1st hit was a double off Jack Morris in the 1st inning. A single in the 2nd off Jack Morris accounted for his 2nd hit. A pitch from Frank Eufemia in the 3rd inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 390 feet from home plate in left field. A single in the 6th off Jeff Bronkey accounted for his 4th hit. A pitch from Steve K. Davis in the 6th inning left his bat for a RBI triple. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! A single in the 8th off Mark Brown accounted for his 6th hit. Kirk did drive in 4 while scoring 4 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .361. He's now the 80th player in league history to hit for the cycle! MONTREAL - Montreal's right-hander Rod Nichols experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 8th inning of the game against Pittsburgh, Nichols complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Montreal wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Nichols had suffered a Bone Chips Shoulder. In 0 starts this year Rod struck out 10 batters in 17 innings of work. His ERA is 5.29, his record 0-1.
Friday 6/3/1994: Montreal's Tarver severely injured
MONTREAL - Montreal's shortstop La Schelle Tarver will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Montreal and Pittsburgh. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Tarver collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Montreal wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Tarver had suffered a Torn Calf Muscle. His season numbers are: .517 AVG, 15 hits, 3 doubles, no triples and no homeruns, along with 5 RBI and 5 runs scored.
