Thursday 6/23/1994: Atlanta's Price severely injured
ATLANTA - When it rains, it pours. Atlanta's lefty Joe W. Price will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Chicago (N) where he left the field in the 1st inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Herniated Disc Back. Surgery will be performed next week. In 16 starts this year Joe W. struck out 71 batters in 88.1 innings of work. His ERA is 2.24, his record 5-1.
Thursday 6/23/1994: Dan Petry pitches 1-hit shutout against Kansas City
SEATTLE - Seattle's right-hander Dan Petry is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Kansas City on just one hit. It's his 5th shutout this season, and the 49th time he has done it in his career. Petry (11-2) struck out 5 and walked 2, throwing 70 of 119 pitches for strikes. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Seattle's third baseman Tim Wallach finished 5 for 5, homering once, doubling once, with three runs scored. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Petry. Seattle improved its record to 44-28, scoring 15 runs on 22 hits.
Wednesday 6/22/1994: David Wells blanks Texas with a 2-hitter
TEXAS - Texas' hitters looked uncomfortable, and New York (A)'s David Wells didn't help them. The left-hander fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Wells (5-4) fanned 8 and walked 1, throwing 120 pitches. New York (A)'s leftfielder Dave Henderson finished with 1 hit in 4 AB. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Wells. New York (A) improved its record to 22-49, scoring 1 run on 2 hits.
Tuesday 6/21/1994: San Francisco's Julio Franco ropes five hits
MONTREAL - Julio Franco hits 'em where they ain't. Montreal certainly agrees as San Francisco's second baseman unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. A pitch from Troy Evers in the 1st inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 427 feet from home plate in left-center. His 2nd hit was a double off Troy Evers in the 3rd inning. Number 5 in the 14th inning accounted for a RBI double. He collected singles in the 9th and in the 10th inning (two RBIs). Julio did drive in 3 while scoring 4 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 106 hits in 288 at bats, resulting in a .368 batting average. The final score of the game was 14-12.
