He hurled a shutout as well. San Francisco's pitcher Mike Bielecki had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Mike went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.56, while fanning 12 in 16 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. This season Bielecki compiled an ERA of 2.57, going 8-1 in 7 starts. He fanned 50 while giving up 66 hits in 70 innings. Mike has pitched one shutout and one complete game.
Friday 7/1/1994: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
Seattle's Dan Petry had a terrific June, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. His record of 6-0 in 6 was among the leagues best this month. In 48.2 innings of work he allowed just 33 hits while striking out 40, compiling an ERA of just 1.85. Dan got two complete game shutouts as well! His ERA of 1.26 helped him to a 12-2 record this year. He struck out 107 and walked 24 in 135.2 innings. Dan has pitched 5 shutouts and 8 complete games. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! Winner of this months National League Pitcher of the Month award is Los Angeles (N)'s Steve Shields. Thursday 6/30/1994: Atlanta's Cotto out for 5 weeks
ATLANTA - Atlanta's players were scared when they had to watch Henry Cotto suffer a serious injury when he dove for a ball in the game against Montreal. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Cotto will probaby miss 5 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Fractured Ulna which will require surgery. His season features a batting average of .283 (63 hits in 223 AB), 9 doubles, one triple and 5 longballs. Cotto collected 27 RBI and 34 runs as well.
Wednesday 6/29/1994: Bob Horner (ATL) will miss full season
ATLANTA - Atlanta's first baseman Bob Horner will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Atlanta and Montreal. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Horner collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Horner has hit for a .220 average this season. He has 35 extra base hits along with 135 total bases, resulting in a .479 slugging percentage.
Monday 6/27/1994: St. Louis' Hudler wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was California's David Justice, who wins the award for the 4th time in his career. David was on fire, hitting .556 with 3 HR and 10 RBI. He has hit 15 bombs while batting .327 this season. His 85 hits and 37 walks add up to a .412 on-base percentage. Rex Hudler from St. Louis wins his 4th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Hudler helped his team with an average of .476 and 13 RBI in 21 at bats. Rex managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week.
Saturday 6/25/1994: Al Leiter pitches his 1st shutout of the season
ATLANTA - With his best stuff going, San Diego's Al Leiter overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Atlanta had no chance, collecting just one hit against the southpaw. Leiter (9-3) fanned 7 and walked 1, throwing 106 pitches. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' San Diego's catcher Mike Stanley stroked 1 hit in 2 AB, hitting a homerun, scoring FOUR times. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Leiter. San Diego scored 8 runs on 10 hits.
Saturday 6/25/1994: Brad Holman (ATL) will miss full season
ATLANTA - Atlanta's right-hander Brad Holman experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 9th inning of the game against San Diego, Holman complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Atlanta wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Holman had suffered a Torn Ligament Elbow. Brad has a record of 1-2 this season, with an ERA of 3.00. In 27 Innings he was able to strike out 5 batters.
Friday 6/24/1994: Luis Leal out for 5-6 weeks
COLORADO - Colorado is without its right-hander Luis Leal for at least 5-6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Jim Abbott in a game against Philadelphia. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Pulled Tricep Muscle. Luis has a record of 3-6 this season, with an ERA of 4.76. In 75.2 Innings he was able to strike out 36 batters.
Friday 6/24/1994: Morris Madden blanks Pittsburgh with a 2-hitter
PITTSBURGH - St. Louis' southpaw Morris Madden is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Pittsburgh found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Madden 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 4th shutouts in his career. Madden (9-4) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 5. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Terry Pendleton helped Madden at the plate, he finished 3 for 6, hitting a double, scoring 2 runs and driving in 3 runs. The final score of the game was 12-0.
