Braves news the last few weeks
6/24 - 7/6
Well while it was nice to see Don and Greg back in the Allstar game, this past week was far more eventful, sadly for all the wrong reasons.
This will mark Don’s 4th All star game, and he had a 11-6 record at the midpoint of the season. This is Greg’s 6th AS game and even with missing a month of the season is again one of the top winning pitchers of the league.
While it was great news hearing about the allstar nods, it did little to overshadow events of the week. First LF M Hall went down with a strained back, which thankfully was something that looked like he would be ok from after a week.
The following night, Brad Holman tore a ligament in his elbow, ending his season. Brad was having a good season as the setup man and in general looked like he was starting to have a breakout season, looking like he might be the guy to eventually be the long term replacement of Doug Corbett. Somehow the Braves managed to go two days without an injury, then Horner tore his ACL. Bob was on pace for another 30+ HR season, and looking to try and crack the top 25 all time RBI list. Just the day before Bob was joking with a reporter and said, “all I have to do is stay healthy and I should break the 500 HR barrier”. As a way to close out the month of June, Henry Cotto that was filling in for the injured Stan Javier, also went down for 5 weeks. Good thing Atlanta started the season with numerous guys that could play RF as they were now down 2 of them.
The Braves barely eked out a winning record over the stretch going 5-4.
7/7-7/14
Well, the Braves didn’t have any injuries for the week, and that was a major plus. Even with all the injuries, the Braves had a pretty successful week going 6-2, however they dropped the 2 games they faced off against the Giants. The high light of the week was when Maddux once again showed his stuff, blanking Pittsburgh on just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season and has Maddux @10-1.
7/15-7/22
It is a good thing Maddux is healthy as besides him, the other pitchers stunk up the place and didn’t get a single win, just 5 loses. Maddux being Maddux, realized each time he took the mound he couldn’t let the team fail and picked up 2 wins for the week, leaving the Braves at an atrocious 2-5 for the week. In a bid to settle down 1B after losing 6 time Gold Glover Horner, the Braves traded for David Segui and called up 23 year old John Mabry from AAA. John was picked by first by the Braves in 1991. It will be interesting to see how he fares making the leap to the bigs mid season.
the #51 rock song of 1994 really summed up the Braves this past week
